We are up in fallouts old hometown. The boy and I went fishing last night. We each caught an 18 inch bass.
Finally got everything in place, work begins on the new porch next Tuesday. The current porch is in bad shape, and it’s not covered - and since it faces west that’s a real problem. New porch will be covered.
And there used to be a sidewalk leading directly to the front of the house, it got removed some years back. I’ve procured about 900 antique bricks to make a new sidewalk, which I’ll do once the porch is on.
I have officially signed my name to start an actuarial scholarship at my alma mater for students of lesser means.
Wow, I didn’t know this was a thing!
How much does something like this cost?
if it’s a one-time gift, probably in the range of 50k (so that the 5% interest provides $2,500 / year). If it’s annually funded, probably in the range of [Scholarship award + small admin fee], so maybe $2,700 / year with $2,500 going to the scholarship and $200 going to the admin fee.
But I don’t know for certain, just guesstimating based on prior history.
Bro’s spot on with how it works, but my alma mater’s minimum donation for an endowment is $100,000, not $50,000, which would provide an annual scholarship of $5,000 in perpetuity.
But I’m not nearly wealthy enough to endow anyone with anything, so I’m doing an active scholarship, which has a minimum annual contribution of $5k (but can be more if more is contributed), and it will be open for a minimum of five years, but is available as long as it is funded. I get to name it, define the terms of how it is awarded (within reason), and get information on/reach out to the recipients if they are willing.
It’s a pretty cool thing. Lots of people in my personal life who I’ve told about this have asked if they can contribute to it, which is a great feeling because I’m glad the people around me care about the things I’m passionate about.
(That isn’t a subtle request for people on here to contribute or anything like that! - I would encourage people who have similar interests to reach out to their own alma maters or local universities to see about their scholarship opportunities if interested in doing something similar.)
I think I’d really like to be a city planner
I think I could be a philanthropist. a kick ass philanthropist! I would have all this money, and people would love me. Then they would come to me… and beg! And if I felt like it, I would help them out. And then they would owe me big time!
This is really cool!
Snarky comment, but everyone is at least 125k short for their kid’s treatment at stanford. Hope i never know anyone who needs it but that place is expensive
Late lunch at my closest brewery today (pizza). They poured the wrong pint for another customer, so they gave it to me.
Got a whole row to myself on this flight. It’s only a few hours but it’s nice!
Ordered two different tacos. Got two tacos each on arrival. Unexpected expense but so worth.
Insert cheeky “two at the same time” reference here.
