Since we are on the subject of dinner, I braised a big pork loin in the oven on a bed of veggies and some oregano, thyme and chives fresh from the garden!! Lots of pan drippings for gravy!!!
I would expect fried fish are rarely caught, even though they can’t escape easily.
Not once they’re in the oil, no
Stressful morning. Treating myself to a mocha frap at sbux for double stars!!! So goooooood!!!
So a couple of years ago, I spent $15 on two boxes of antique door hardware. Locksets, knobs and plates, some locks. Figured maybe the locksets might come in handy if mine ever break. No idea what to do with the rest but it’s $15. Cool.
Someone on Reddit was restoring their doors and commented that they were missing two plates on one door, and another door had the knob, plates, and lockset removed. I found the four plates they needed, a lockset, and while I don’t have knobs that match exactly I found knobs that do match. I told them I don’t want any money, I’d just mail them over.
Old house wins.
Oh, sushi. So I will try… almost any food. I’ve had sea urchin on several occasions and I never really liked it. The texture was part of it. But I was also eating it in places like Colorado, so maybe not the best urchin?
Anyway, we went to a place on Maui and I got the omakase, and one piece was urchin with salmon roe. 10/10. The whole meal was phenomenal, old school Japanese sushi. Place is called Koiso, reservations are tricky, worth the effort.
My new footrest that my company bought for me is the bomb.
We’re going to miss the DNC convention next week (yay) because we’ll be away on vacation. Last month, we also missed the RNC convention (yay) because it was during our annual family trip with the kids and grandkids to Michigan . We didn’t plan it this way. Just happy coincidences. Nice break from all the craziness and political ads.
Happy, happy!
My son turns 9 tomorrow. He was born at 3am on the nose, and when his birthday is on the weekend we often stay up until 3am, but I have to work tomorrow so we will do an all-nighter tomorrow night instead. He’s a good kid and I’m proud of him.
End of an era. Last night i pulled all my servers from the colo facility. Ive been running my own hardware for 25 years. No more. Web stuff went on the cloud, internal stuff went on a machine in the house. Its surprisingly a relief.
Plus, bonus good times. A local student was begging for a ride back to toronto with his belongings. I said id take him no charge, just give me a hand with the servers. Turns out to be a very cool experience. He got to see a data center. And i got te downlow on him. Hes basically bootstrsapping his life. He knows exactly what he wants in a relationship, and its nonstandard. Way more self aware than most people his age. Excelling at a very competitive program. And when i dropped him off, ooof, very low income area. Glad i could give him a ride for free since i expect he doesnt really have money to pay. Its always uplifting to meet cool people like this.
So this is the kind of fun experience I have with these folks:
The student mentions his sister was going to teach him how to crochet this term. Curiously, when I was a kid, I did a lot of crocheting. So that gets into the story of how one year I crocheted these chicks inside eggs for everyone for christmas. Relevant, we still have one. It gets hung on our christmas tree every year, after which we apparently celebrate the relentless teasing of me, because a) big burly man doing crochet and b) the chicken thing is pretty laughable in its own right.
So I told him I’d send him the pattern for it, managed to actually find it on the internet! Here it is: Happy Easter Animals pattern Women's Day March 27 1978 via The Chicken Chick.pdf - Google Drive
It is nice to not live in a battleground state or early primary/caucus state. I visited one and was dismayed at all the political garbage on TV. And this was months away from the election/caucus.
Most of the presidential commercials I see are on the news shows showing them and reporting on them as opposed to actually seeing them as commercials during shows.
Don’t come to our purple state right now. The political ads will drive you nuts. We also have a US senate race. Double whammy. But do visit after the elections. It’s a nice state, especially in the summer, winter, spring, and fall.
Our kids are lucky. Our daughter lives in blue Chicago, and our son in red Indy. Hardly any ads.
The political ads on the news drive me nuts. But so do the candidates so

We got home from camping this afternoon. One of my sons set up the tent and canopy in the backyard to dry and brush off. I heard a storm was in the forecast, so I said we should pack everything up after dinner. About 5 minutes after we put away the tent and canopy, it started raining.
While we were camping, I regretted that we didn’t plan to stay another day. Now that I know that area is going to be hit by tonight’s thunderstorm, I’m glad we didn’t.
Packing up camp in the rain is a total pita, no doubt.
We’ve packed up in a hurry with an anxious dog during a windstorm, but doing so in a thunderstorm would’ve been much worse.
took younger kid to college today. nest is empty. so far we are all doing ok
We got a cheese and bacon loaf from a baker friend. I swear it weighs a good kilo (2.2 pounds for our American friends) !! So gooooood!!!
