I think the police caused confusion by calling the shooter a “transgender woman” which makes most people think trans-woman but I’ve read “assigned female at birth”, former teacher remembers having “her” in class, and the shooter used male pronouns more recently. So I think the shooter was a trans-man. NY Post has a photo.
Anyway, since it is fairly rare for females to be mass shooters, the fact that it is a trans-man is mildly interesting. Maybe gender identity is more important than biology in determining one’s propensity to be a mass shooter?
Right wing twitter seems to be blaming hormone treatments like they don’t realize that 50% of they population has testosterone and easy access to guns.
Not law quite yet but appears to be on track with a Democratic trifecta in the state. Assuming it passes, is this the first serious legislation of its sort?
I’m here for it. Not long ago there was a mass shooting (I think 4 or 5 dead) about 20 miles away from me. I didn’t even think to mention it to my partner. Just 2 or 3 years ago there was another mass shooting at the second closest mall to us, where my partner used to work.
That depends on what the supreme court does with it.
If they follow Bruen, Michigan will need to find examples of states that had some versions of safe storage laws in 1791. I’m guessing there weren’t a lot of gun safes back then.
I’ve read (and also thought) that mass shooting is (of course) a form of suicide. So obviously a trans person would be more likely.
I would also guess that to the extent that genders mean anything, the motivation to commit evil violence is probably related to other violent interests, like wrestling, football, hunting, etc. Some things that are traditionally, but certainly not exclusively, male.
Not sure what the more likely refers to. There have been almost 3,000 mass shootings in the US in the past 5 years. 3 of them have been by people who are trans, so a smidge over 0.1%. That means that trans people are under represented among mass shooters by a factor of 4-10.
He meant trans people are more likely to commit suicide, which is factually true, but logically unsound the way he phrased it.
Mass shooting => suicide != Suicide => mass shooting
And obviously the vast difference in cis and trans proportions means that mass shooting is more likely committed by a cis person (man), as factually confirmed, even if we assume mass shooting per capita is the same in both groups (it’s not).
More likely to be suicidal. There could certainly be other factors that make trans people less likely to turn that suicidalness into mass-murder.
(And while I’m clarifying here-- I should add-- trans people are probably more likely to be suicidal because they are more likely to be rejected, not just because they are trans.)
Also should further clarify-- I meant mass shootings like where you go into a school or a church and try to kill a lot of random people before getting killed by a cop.
Most “mass shootings” are just drug wars, and not an act of suicide. In fact, often nobody dies.
Now that the news seems to be stabilizing on the shooter being a trans-man, I have to admit that I wonder about the extent to which testosterone (regardless of how it is acquired/generated) plays a role in the propensity to commit acts of mass violence.
