Gun Violence in America

pretty sure 100% of the population has testosterone.

The good news about trans-people is it reduces the population of men.
The bad news about trans-people is it increases the population of men.

Was the shooter on testosterone? If so that seems like a plausible theory.

If not there might still be a connection. As Lucy likes to point out there probably is some biological reason that most trans people are trans even if we haven’t fully figured out what it is.

That’s a very disturbing thought, but certainly not one that I can contradict.

Yeah, that seems very plausible.

I thought I read a study posted here somewhere that with high levels of acceptance, trans people are dramatically less likely to commit suicide, but still higher than cis.

why is it surprising? gender dysphoria can take a toll on your mental health whether you’re accepted or not.

cis people get depressed and have disorders about their bodies too, to the point where they literally starve themselves to death

I’d call it male-phobic. Of course this entire thread male-phobic.

And twig here is awkwardly wondering where male-ness comes from.

Testosterone levels are not really related to trans though.

They are related to sex, age, race, etc. Which certainly runs afoul of every other form of discrimination.

Testosterone is an integral procedure for transmen to feel more like who they identify with. To claim that this pushed this person to commit mass shooting is indeed transphobic.

Testosterone levels vary significantly over the population. twig93 appears to assume higher levels cause an increased propensity for violence. Do you agree or disagree? I don’t care about the rest of her theory.

It’s not, it’s incidental. If Twig’s argument is that that men commit murder because they have a lot of testosterone in their system. Then a trans-man is no more evil and dangerous than a cis-man.

She’s not blaming trans for murder, she’s blaming men, which includes trans-men.

She is not being trans-phobic at all. She is being trans-inclusive. And sexist.

I’ll answer your question if you’ll answer mine.

Most mass shooters are men. It’s fair to wonder why. Nature/nurture, all that jazz.

Of course, all mass shooters use firearms. That’s where I’d focus my efforts to prevent them in the future. Silly, I know.

I don’t understand how this line of argument is helpful.

Then we agree.

The claim that ā€œhormonesā€ drove a trans man to commit a mass shooting, and in so doing communicating some objection to trans people being trans does feels transphobic.

However, speculation that testosterone in cis males (and perhaps in trans males) may in someway be correlated with acts of mass violence is perhaps understandable, given the media observations that extremely few females have been caught engaging in such acts, and given the circumstances. I wouldn’t view that speculation, in that context, as transphobic.

Maybe an argument could be made about it being ā€œmale-phobic in generalā€ā€¦but I think that might be over-reaching.
