GOP and the Big Lie

The family of the GA SoS began receiving death threats almost immediately after the election result. His wife provided Reuters some of the threats she received.

That’s a weird question. Are they vaccinated, or just healthy? The poll came about a week after the CDC lifted its mask guidance. Most people and places were adjusting (and still are).

Yep. Ignorance is everywhere and all groups no matter how smart, even actuaries, are rife with ignorance. An actuary that believes in witchcraft (or even voodoo economics) can still be a competent actuary if they do not apply their ignorance to their job such as performing a ritual rather than setting a reserve. A citizen needs to understand how the government works at a basic level just like an actuary needs to know to set reserves against future liabilities.

The Big Lie and its proponents are attacking the fundamentals of American democracy. The right to vote is the nonviolent means for the people to change government. It may be poorly structured, it may be poorly used, but it is the means that gives the people power over the government. To purposefully, deliberately, methodically attack this right, to use falsehoods and unfounded fears to motivate citizens to work against their own best interest is an attack on the very nature of who we are as a nation. Listen to the citizens that violently attacked the Capital on the 6th. They believed their votes were stolen, they believed a set of lies purposely used to motivate them as they were active, strong supporters of America. They may be ignorant and easily duped but at their core most of them believed they were defending America. That is why The Big Lie cannot be tolerated.

Those that push and support The Big Lie are fundamentally evil in the realm of American politics. Those that stand by or try to dismiss this as just another political spat are at best ignorant of the nature of our democracy. The right to vote is the first stone in the foundation of our government. The GOP’s consistent decade long attack on those rights culminating in this big lie that the vote counts (committed by republicans mind you) are fraudulent is designed to destroy the American government. To replace it with a single party government where their rule of law only applies to you, not them.

21 Republican House members voted against a bill to award Congressional gold medals to the Capitol Police for defending the Capitol.

Oh, look. There’s mine. Not surprising in the least.

I assume they would vote to give Congressional gold medals to the insurrectionists.

This list isn’t a surprised. It contains the worst member (Gaetz) and the dumbest member (Gohmert). Obviously Greene and Boebert are on there as well.

Hice (GA) voted for another version of this bill. Since then he announced a run for GA SoS with Trump’s support, and has changed his mind apparently as a result.

Interestingly it’s basically the exact same people.

Yeah but if you believe those things it’s not too hard to believe that a bunch of elites conspired to steal the 2020 election. I have seen in polls that there are Biden voters that believe the election was stolen which is interesting to me. That tells me that a large chunk of people who believe it really believe it, they are not just saying it because it is politically expedient.

Like Tucker Carlson knows he is full of crap but many people watching him think he is just a brave patriot exposing truths on their behalf at his personal risk.

I would expand on this a bit.

I think the problem with the big lie, first and foremost, is that it established a cult of personality around trump. It puts him before truth.

Democracy can sometimes be in tension with liberty, even as it usually supports it. There can be a tyranny of the majority. But truth cannot be at odds with either democracy or liberty.

This is the evil: to put a single person before truth or morals. It’s ironic this has happened with trump, who is neither great nor good in any objective sense.

I also find it ironic that so much of the christian right is so enamored with trump. Their supposed religious devotion isn’t stopping them from making him into an idol.

I just picked a random post from the string of posts on the subject so this isn’t response isn’t specific to Dan.

Only 29% may believe he will be reinstated, but reality is worse than that. More than 50% believe Biden won via some sort of election fraud and the Trump is the ACTUAL president.

56% of Republicans believe the election was rigged or the result of illegal voting, and 53% think Donald Trump is the actual President, not Joe Biden.

The most ironic thing to me is that Trump didn’t even concoct this plan to try to steal the election. This is all a narcissistic coping mechanism to keep from admitting to himself that he lost. He invented this not to be President, but to keep from having to accept that he is a loser. The people just think he is this super great person who was robbed of an election when in reality all they are doing is enabling his mental disorder.

The truly nefarious are the people that know this and are using this lie to their advantage to garner support and change voting laws.

This is spot on, Dadgum.

Ghosts are real. That’s just good thinking.

He just happened to have a rally the day Congress met to certify the election and told his supporters to go disrupt the counting. Not accepting loser status may have been his motivation,. but the only solution was him still being President.

But he doesn’t need to invent higher purposes to be president. One doesn’t get the sense he wanted to steal the election because he had convinced himself that he, Trump, was the only one who could save the country. He is narcissistic enough to be willing to overthrow our election simply because he didn’t want to be a loser. It is especially pathetic.

A new poll is out from the non partisan Democracy Fund that details some views on the big lie.
