GOP and the Big Lie

Of course he’ll be ostracized, there is no room for truth in the modern GQP party.

Why did she post a clip of BLM/Antifa dressed up as Trumpers? /red

GOP Chairwoman McDaniel later claimed that the reference to legitimate political discourse was not referring to those involved in violence. Rather the committee is persecuting those who weren’t directly involved. I guess she’s referring to Trump as a victim of persecution for his political discourse..

this morning, Pence’s comments were 21st on the phone-web foxnews.com. “Trump responds after Pence rejects claim he could have overturned election”

so it was well covered

Some folks in NC are trying to disqualify Madison Cawthorn from running again for Congress. The disqualification clause of the 14th Amendment bans from future office any American elected official who swore an oath to uphold the Constitution but then “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

According to the linked article NC law has a very low bar for these types of challenges. To trigger a review by the State Board of Elections, voters only need to show a “reasonable suspicion or belief” that a candidate is ineligible for office. At that point, the burden of proof shifts onto the candidate, who then needs to demonstrate that they’re qualified, based on a “more likely than not” standard.

Cawthorn has filed suit to block it.

“engaged in insurrection” seems conveniently specific to the case at hand…

It’s probably accurate as well.

The lawyer quote is somewhat humorous. “This is fundamentally anti-democratic and contrary to the public interest.” He’s talking about the 14th Amendment and not about trying to overturn an election, of course.

Hopefully Cawthorn can go back home and just record videos of him punching rotting trees on Twitter.

January 6th committee says Trump violated multiple laws in his attempt to overturn the election

Nothing there that will make it through the Justice Department, but this was only enough info to get some documents from his layer so more to come I assume.

Hopefully this gets more interesting, and some of the obvious Republican lawmakers get ratted out

I’m not very optimistic about

However, in related good news, the gov’t got its first conviction in a jury trial today. This might have been their easiest case.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/08/us/politics/guy-reffitt-jan-6-trial.html

I’m not clear on why he went to trial.

Mr. Reffitt’s lawyer, William L. Welch, put on a muted and abbreviated defense, starting with an opening statement that lasted not much more than three minutes. He called no witnesses and presented no evidence,

Maybe hoped the judge would throw out the obstruction of justice charge, or that he would get a shorter sentence from the judge than whatever the JD was offering.

Ginny Thomas, wife of Justice Thomas, was texting Mark Meadows urging him to help overturn the election and install Trump as supreme leader. She was sharing Mike Lindell style conspiracy theories with the White House. WaPo has more details, but since that’s behind a paywall I’m sharing this link instead:

Meanwhile it seems like Mark Meadows may be prosecuted for voter fraud. Seems pretty clear that he submitted a fraudulent application for an absentee ballot.

Was it absentee ballot issues or lying on registration (not really his residence?) ?

Both I think

Chris Wallace says Fox News coverage of the Big Lie and January 6th events is what finally made him walk away from Fox

Political hopeful in MI, clearly inspired by Storm the Capitol. Backed by Trump, if it needed to be said.

The website itself is mostly sterile, the guy himself was fired for padding his timesheets and went on to be involved in the Big Lie by challenging election results.

A common origin story across many great American politicians
