Alyssa's FAQ

When.are.you moving? Do you have a new.job? And your spouse, will they be working after the move?

January 15. Job situation is still in limbo — reasonable chance I’m staying at my current job at least medium term.

She wants to work, but she and the kids are not moving until July.

You’ll be there for interlude and skating on the canal!

And your kids will be there at peak Calypso water park (haven’t been there myself).

If you were moving a bit earlier, we’re having a pig slaughtering and sausage making weekend near Ottawa in November, but I guess you’re going to miss out on that. Don’t say you weren’t invited.

That triggered a memory. I was a toddler in a small village near the calypso park. Sometimes when I’m back home, I do a tour and drive around some of the small towns and back roads. Ok, I do that every time lol.
In that small town, there’s a museum. Looks shoddy, and also always looks closed. I’ve been curious for many years about going in, but it always looks closed.
This past summer a family member was doing a drive, and stopped. Checked the door and it was open, walked right in. Apparently it’s open a.lot. the staff were quite excited to see them, and the museum was interesting. Imma check it out for sure next time I go back home.

Of note, despite tagging them and the post being up for 2 full work days, I haven’t heard from any of the 3 in the society’s leadership that I tagged.

Message today from your soon-to-be Prime Minister in response to curriculum protests:

I personally know some of the current SOA and CAS leadership so find the lack of a response to be very disappointing.

I would hope, if you become a CIA member, that you will find their leadership to be more responsive. In my two years on the diversity committee for the CIA, I have found the CIA Board of Directors and the staff to be very supportive of our suggestions for moving towards being a more inclusive actuarial organization.

Having said that, there are undoubtedly small pockets of opposition within the CIA membership towards our diversity initiatives. However, unlike the CAS, there is not an organized group pushing back on diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Well, that’s good timing. I just communicated with a big player inthe canadian financial podcast scene who suggested I do an insurance podcast. Got off a call with my marketing person to start reading up on how to do podcasts, and I see this. Forwarded to them for review!

I have a bad feeling they got spooked by the assholes of We LoveTheCAS. They flipped out and went on a crusade to take over CAS leadership because of DEI initiatives that they felt were unnecessary. Imagine the aneurysms they’d have if CAS moved a conference due to bigotry.

Very possible the CAS leadership feared actually being voted out if they took a principled stand for DEI and against hate.

I don’t think so. I think they just went ahead and booked conferences the way they always have, without thinking very hard about accessibility.

Welovethecas candidates have done very poorly in the elections. I don’t think the cas is afraid of them taking power, just if them being embarrassing.

Valid. If that were the case I would hope they’d at least reach out and say, “Sorry, we didn’t think about this and it’s too late to change, I can’t make promises but we will explore alternatives for next year.”

They did that the first time, then followed it up with meetings in MO and FL the next two years.

Lol, even I won’t go to florida right now. And I blend in. Imagine having a conference there right now, that’s not just oblivious, that’s downright deliberately ignoring issues.

last year i attended an industry conference at the trump doral property in orlando. i was prepared for it to be overtly trying but it wasnt. i did not stay on site.

So with the move, is all your new paperwork correctly gendered? I.e.drivers license? Car Imsurance? Curious what the state of affairs is in Canada with that stuff.
