20Q Game 30

I would probably say that it was in use from when I start to read it until I finish, or possibly when I acknowledge to myself that I’m not going to finish any time soon.

Suppose I read chapters 1-27 of a 30 chapter book and set it down on the coffee table to make dinner. My husband picked it up and put it in his suitcase to take on his next work trip.

I would not be happy about that (and would ask him to put it back if I realized before he left) on the grounds that I wasn’t finished with it.

Even by your definition, my reading is not restricted to a single location. I mentioned the sofa, the comfy chair, the bed, the chair in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, and the chair in the exam room at the doctor’s office…

And within those locations it’s not really stationary either. I’ll shift positions, cross or uncross my legs which changes the height of the book, switch hands, etc.

I’m not confident that any book is the right answer, as it’s not difficult to assign a utilization method to a book.

I dunno, twig and I seem to be disagreeing about that. She thinks the book is utilized from when you first start reading it until you are done, and I think you are only utilizing it while you are actively reading it. And the difference between those interpretations could make it hard to answer question 6. Especially if it’s study material, that you might carry back and forth between work and home.

(although most study material these days is electronic.)

Well, we do have a few guesses left.

Is it some kind of book?

  1. (VA) Is it a physical object? Yes
  2. (Tiffany) Does it breathe oxygen? No
  3. (Celalta) Is it man-made? Yes
  4. (JFG) Is its primary use for recreation purposes? No
  5. (1695814) Is it larger than a bread box? This object comes in many sizes. The most common are not larger than a bread box. Some are larger than a breadbox.
  6. (JFG) Is it typically utilized indoors? Yes
  7. (VA) Is it typically used on or near the ground? No
  8. (1698514) Does it use electricity? No
  9. (JFG) Is it typically stationary when in use? I’m defining stationary as even if not secured to a surface, it doesn’t significantly move locations, such as a photo frame or clock. Yes
  10. (JSM) does it float? No
  11. (JFG) Do most first world people have one? No
  12. (Twig) Given the item, would you typically find it in a home? Yes
  13. (1695814) does it have writing on it? Yes
  14. (Tiffany) would this item be commonly found in a specific room in the house? No
  15. (1695814) Do most people use it daily? No
  16. (Tiffany) Is it some kind of book? No

Hint: The reason question 6 gave me pause was in figuring out what exactly it means to “utilize” this object

Hmm, what has writing on it?
A calendar? “Utilization” is easily indoors
A scale? (Some are electronic, most don’t fit in a breadbox)
A tonka truck?
No branded food items, as they are typically used in one room.
Some other branded item that is sometimes used outdoors?

A box popped into my head, but…

…it doesn’t quite fit those, so now I’m not thinking that.

My calendar floats…and I use it daily.
I suppose a scale doesn’t have to use batteries but most do these days, so that counts as “yes” to electricity. Further, I would expect to find a scale in the bathroom (for people) or kitchen (for food).
A tonka truck is typically not stationary when being used.

Now I thought of a safe…

…but many are firmly planted on the ground…unless you’re Philip Drummond & you keep it behind a wall-mounted picture frame.

My children are man-made, iykwim.

I’ll show myself out now.

Are they? Hotel safes are usually in the closet on the shelf. So are many house safes. It’s weird to put a safe on the ground unless it’s those heavy duty ones.

Yeah, I also came up with topiary as something both alive and man-made.

And someone suggested a breed of dog that wouldn’t exist without human intervention.

I’ve since thought of GMOs and bonsai trees as both man-made and alive.

But if the answer to “alive” had been “yes” it really would have narrowed things down.

But it was “no” because most things man-made are not alive. And honestly, my question sucked. I shouldn’t have wasted the question on that.

I think that would be a hard question to answer because the answer really is “it depends” if the object were a safe.

I’m guessing it’s not a safe simply because there was no ambiguity or hesitation about the “no” response.

Unless it is specifically a wall safe.

Well, we’re not talking about hotels now, are we?

Mine’s not! It’s in the office, on the floor, under the desk, and we leave the key in the lock so that we don’t lose it.

Your weird. neener neener neener.

Rather than a “safe” . . . a “fire box”:

The one I have is about the size of a bread box (hence, an answer of “no” to the Q of "is it larger than a breadbox); and these would likely be far more common than the larger “fire-proof safes”.

It also fits all other clues given so far.

I’m trying to think of everything in the house, and this thread reminded me that I need to change my air filter.

A trophy comes to mind. Maybe a framed thing or some kind of statuary…

Ooh, an Oscar! It something similar. I like that.

Happy to be of service :grinning:

I would opt for a general “trophy” (rather than a specific one, IMO).
