Mr March-September

Hoping Kershaw pitches in this year’s post-season as I would like to see him face Scherzer, of course

Kershaw and Martinez both have 2800+ IP, and identical career 154 ERA+, Pedro probably had a higher 5 year peak but Kershaw probably had a higher 10 year peak.

only Mariano who was a reliever and Foster and Rogan who pitched in the Negro leagues have a higher career ERA+ than Kershaw and Pedro. (min 1000 IP)

Kershaw truely is one of the all time greats who was remarkably consistent and one of the few pitchers ever who had no down years in his career to speak of. Last year when injuries limited him to just 30 IP he had an 89 ERA+ but his next worst is his 98 in his 100 inning rookie campaign at age 20 and then this year and 2021 where he’s posted 119.

Two pitchers in history have 3000k 300w and an ERA < 3.00 (Walter Johnson & Seaver)
I strongly doubt anyone will ever join that club

Unless things change with SP going longer and the run scoring environment dropping both 300 Wins and sub 3 career ERA are both going to be tough going forward let alone doing both.

But the 3000K club should continue to be a growing group.

I always find the IP number and complete games stats interesting as they show how the pitching game has dramatically changed. Even thirty years ago some pitchers hit 5000 IP but we will never see that again.

This reminds me of a season when I was growing up: Phil Niekro started 44 games in 1979. He went 21-20, and threw 342 innings. It was his 3rd consecutive year throwing over 330 innings.

Niekro was awesome: 245 complete games.

The current ace for the Jays (Gausman) has two complete games in his career. Game is so different now.

Probably not. Velander, Scherzer and Kershaw are 1, 2, 3 in active pitchers. There are a few active pitchers who may reach 3000 depending on health, effectiveness and longevity but none are assured of reaching that that I can see. No one looks like they will come close to 4000 let alone 5000.

1-3 are from long ago but Phil Niekro, Ryan, Perry, Sutton Carlton all topped 5K innings and started in the 60s.

Greg Maddox is the only one who started after the 60s to reach 5K, though Blyleven and Clemens were both close.

Verlander who is the active leader is currently 68th but with 2 more starts this year he might move up a couple spots.

Fergie Jenkins 267 CGs, 284 Ws

Cy Young had 749 complete games. Different game indeed.

But it looks like Jenkins is the leader for guys whose career started after WWII.

currently the batter and pitcher with the most Ks has the same number

It would be awesome if Ohtani was both of those. I know he’s not, but that would be something.

Exciting races in the AL as no team has clinched first in its division and six teams have between 84 and 88 wins. Only Jays have clinched a playoff spot (90 wins).

I’m not a Cleveland fan, but it still would be humorous to see Detroit blow a 15 1/2 game lead and get shut out of the playoffs. Something for the White Sox to aspire to next year?

I think the White Sox should aspire to beating the Yanks in Yankee Stadium this week.

They were looking like they would avoid the 3rd 100 loss season in a row until losing their last 8 of 9. Need to win 5 of last 6 now…

Unbelievable collapse by Detroit and surge by Cleveland. Detroit plays its remaining 6 games against Cleveland and Boston, both desperately trying to make the playoffs. Should be interesting.

End of the MLB season is always exciting, for whatever you think about the rest of the long season.

The NL is not as exciting as AL this year. Especially with Bos-Tor, Bos-Det and Det-Cle head-on series.
