Phillies defeat red sox with walk off 10th inning catcher’s interference. (bases loaded) quirky

The catcher doing the walk-off is quite rare.

During yesterday’s radio postgame show, after the White Sox won their 5th of 6 games after the all star break, the guy actually said “If they keep up this pace, they’ll finish the season with 86 wins and 76 losses”. True enough, but…

Just a handful of Jays’ fans in Detroit for their current series despite both teams leading their divisions. Usually there would be thousands. I thought the Jays’ resurgence might trump the anti-Trump sentiment but Windsor is a car town that is hurting badly from the tariffs.

Hey! Guess who won at least as many games this year as they did last year!

Hey, guess what website just got big enough to be hacked by bots?!

I don’t understand why as there is no financial or political advantage in doing so. Other than being malicious, why would we be targeted?

No idea. My little niche hobby discord communities get hit by this crap all the time.

PCA is in a bad slump and has struck out something like 11 out of the last 15 at bats. I don’t know if this is an old one, but today on the radio they referred to him as PCK.

Not as if females (or anyone) need to be in Top Athlete Shape to be an MLB Baseball umpire. That was usually the reason given for other sports. “Can’t keep up with play!”

In ATL, so @ArthurItas , you might want to attend history.
Too bad it hasn’t been moved up to the Sunday Night slot. Not on the MLBN Baseball Network, either.

The Rockies make the White Sox almost look like contenders this year. Jays had 45 runs (modern day record) and 63 hits (club record) in their current three game series against them.

More on the First Female MLB Baseball Umpire, though we are not supposed to know so much about umpires:

I’m already feeling annoyed about the hatefest that is sure to happen from many.

Do umpires start on probation or something like that? Or can they get sent to the minors, like a player?

It is our prerogative to ignore.
For example, I’ve heard nothing bad. Yet.
I don’t think I’m missing anything important.

Not like ignoring starvation nor hunting humans for sport.

Definitely. They start in the Minors, stay for 8-10 years or so. No one starts their career in the Majors as several players have done. As a “substitute” (filling in for sick or vacationing Umps), she’ll be back in the Minors after these games.

probably not otherwise Angel Hernandez and Laz Diaz would have been there a long time ago

From a few days ago: Will Smith is leading the league in Batting Average. Cue the innumerate who still think this is a more important stat than OBP. Do note that he ALSO leads the league in OBP, because BA leaders often have high OBP. And BA is important. Just not as important. No one says it is worthless. It is part of OBP, fer cryin’ out loud. So are walks, and walks are not random.

However, as a catcher, he requires days off or else his production, both O and D, will fall off. So, sometimes he is on the list and sometimes he is not.
Obvious solution, nowhere in this particular article, is to have a decent-defense backup catcher, and for Will Smith to play 1B or 3B or DH (put Ohtani at 1B), whichever he can do decently.

Innumerate writer still wants BA to be more important than OBP:

The batting title used to be one of the most prestigious awards in the game. In the analytical revolution, batting average has become something of a lost statistic, sacrificed at the altar of on-base percentage.

This seems hyperbole.

Posey does not quite buy all of this. He would not sign a player simply because of a high batting average, he says, but he considers a high batting average a worthy statistic.

One, due to sharper minds getting into the Base Ball Industry, OBP has taken on more importance for the single reason: getting on base is better than getting an out 98.5% of the time. It has ALWAYS been more important. BA only gets you part of the way there.

Discovered as more important about 80 years ago. Official stat for about 40 years. Harangued about in a movie released about 20 years ago.
And STILL, the innumerate cling to it cuz history, cuz someone important to them said it was important. I once believed this, until I read about math people writing about baseball.

On the flip side of this is an intriguing web article with some real math, so maybe it is numerate:

Interesting analysis. I like his proposed slash figure.

IMO: In short, all players should try to hit at or above average, and all GMs should be looking for players with higher than average BAs to replace those who cannot hit. All players should also not swing at balls that will lead to outs, and GMs should look for players with higher than average BB%. Being patient at the plate means getting better balls to swing at. Players who do both should be values highly, relative to their position.
And when there are men on base, getting a hit is often a lot better than a walk (runs can actually be scored, which, last I checked, is good), depending heavily on the player up next. But, a walk in that case is better than an out. Of course, pitchers should also know this and try to throw where the bat ain’t.

And all this suggests that Will Smith should be at the top of the order (sucks to be a catcher having to take off equipment versus DH Ohtani swinging a bat for half an inning), getting an extra plate appearance every several days (easier to reach the MLB minimum), with Ohtani behind him. (Also not noted in the article.) And to put in a backup catcher during late innings and have Smith play another position to get an extra PA.

Great career comeback! I thought he was all washed up after that Oscars slap fight.

I should have allowed a pause for catcalls and remarks after writing his name.
