in HS you can verbally declare an appeal during dead ball time. but that wouldn’t solve the time play component of R3 scoring before you appealed R2 leaving early.
Kershaw gets to 3000.
But, in a nit to be picked, Freeman “walks it off for Dodgers” (per ESPN) for the win.
NO! The OTHER team walks off in the loss! They walk off, head down, as losers.
Freeman had to actually get to first base and touch it. That Right Fielder would have been smart to throw to first, if anyone were covering, if Freeman simply “walked” there then walked off.
Coined by Dennis Eckersley, the pitcher, in a July 30, 1988 story. Eckersley would go on to pitch, and walk off afterward, one of the most famous walk-off’s in World Series history later that year.
Your forte? ![]()
Pretty much.
I heard much of the game on the radio. I was pretty confused at first, as it was clear from the loudness that it was not a normal crowd.
I had a laugh when they caught the runner stealing just before his 3000th strikeout. That meant that the current batter was almost certainly going to be the last batter he faced for the night, and Kershaw’s only remaining chance to get the record last night. But he got the batter.
I had to leave right after it got tied. It already felt like a loss to let Kershaw off the hook.
Aaron Judge is doing as well as any hitter can: reached base 11 out of his first 14 ABs in his last three games against the Jays and had some key hits.
However, the Jays scored 28 runs to win all three games. Yanks may still run away with the AL East but Judge needs a lot more help.
So Judge got on base three out of four times yesterday to bring his four game series total to 14 out of 18. Yanks still lost. Five ABs were intentional walks. Maybe that is how you beat the Yanks.
Overpaid
Or maybe the Yankees need to put a fearsome hitter after Judge in the batting order to reduce his intentional walks?
I was a Yankees fan in 1961 when Maris was chasing the HR record. Ralph Houk changed the batting order so that Maris and Mantle batted 3-4 in the lineup. It was the reverse before then. Pitchers had to pitch to Maris with Mantle on deck. Of course that team was so loaded with hitting talent, Yogi batted fifth, that there were no easy outs.
By paying Judge less so they can afford another such hitter?
Oh wait, affordability has never been a Yankee issue. My bad.
PCA has become apparently the first player in MLB history with 25 HRs, 25 SBs, and 70RBI before the all star break.
Even as a Sox fan, I have to admit that he is fun to watch. He’s had some exciting plays in the field, too.
Missed the game, but this looks pretty cool.
The HR off instead of extra innings is ok, but to give the MVP to someone who hit off a batting practice pitcher rather than in game action is just stupid
when they could have given it to kershaw for starting the 2nd inning and throwing 6 pitches…
i think the 1b in the 9th who somehow stopped what would have been the 3rd double in a row saved that game.
MVP awards are inherently stupid
Well, the whole thing has become stupid. The all star game was interesting when it was the almost-only time when you got to see the NL players play the AL players. That happens every day now, so they lost that and they keep trying to come up with any reason to make it relevant. But imo it’s really just not. At least for me, I noticed that my interest in the all star game ended right when massive interleague play started.
Give the winning team and extra million dollars each and it would get slightly more interesting.
Two sides to the rookie pitcher “conTROversy”:
Philly players: “Waah, my teammate didn’t get picked!” STFU!
Dave Roberts: “Yeah, I picked him to get some interest, some entertainment.” True American Sports quote: it is entertainment. For fans. So they keep spending their money. USMNT Coach Poch said so (in many different words) a week ago:
“If you play NFL or basketball or hockey in this country, you always play within the same culture, where the entertainment idea is fundamental,” he said. "The teams or franchises play amongst themselves within America – it’s entertainment. And if soccer was a USA-originated sport, played within this nation, for entertainment, then fine. But the problem is that you have to go compete with people who play for their lives, for survival, for a lot of things that go beyond simple entertainment. Of course soccer needs to be entertaining, but in other countries, it is a religion, and that always gives you extra when it comes to struggling hard to win.
IMO: If the kid deserved the spot, then full stop.
