2024 NFL Football Thread

The announcer had been watching too many Bears games. With 14 seconds and no timeouts, he was saying they need to get the first down, then run a play to spike the ball, then get a couple chances to score after that. How ridiculous. A play that didn’t go into the endzone or out-of-bounds would have ended the game.

CIN absolutely blew the end of regulation, when they had 1st and goal at the DEN 7 with 1:37 remaining with DEN having one timeout. The correct play calls were 3 kneel downs (no risk of fumble or penalty), then kick the short FG with <10 seconds remaining. Instead, Chase Brown gets hurt trying to avoid scoring a TD, cannot hobble off of the field, and forces a CIN timeout.

Also this totally screwed me in FF as Joe Burrow got 2 more TDs as a result.

NFL end-game coaching is still suspect.

I play in a season long contest with a few friends where we pick every game against the spread. I’m in second, and at the moment a long shot to take first.

The guy in front of me picked all the same late afternoon/evening picks as me today, so my only remaining chance to gain ground this week is MNF. Right now I have that pick as DET -3.5, and the public is overwhelmingly choosing DET this week. Debating on whether I should switch to SF. Won’t know what he’s picked until kickoff tomorrow.

You win none of the games where you score no points. Except maybe soccer in a shootout.

No one said the offense has to score the points though

True, but someone on your team needs to create points. Or the best you can do is 0-0 which won’t work in a playoff game.

What if everyone dies…???

With the MIN victory, the MNF game is meaningless for DET. I could see most coaches resting players for the Week 18 matchup w/MIN. But you never know with Dan Campbell.

It looks to me like the division title is still to be decided. They each have 2 losses (if DET wins tonight) and they play each other next week.

AFC has 1 spot left. Denver has 1 game lead needs W or L by both CIN, MIA, CIN needs W and losses by DEN, MIA and MIA needs win and loss by DEN, ties could change it but how often do they happen. At least I think that is scenario.

NFC has 1 spot left, TB win or tie in, ATL needs W and TB L

Still a few division spots and seeding battles but a lot on meaningless W18 football.

I think…
Denver needs a win OR tie to advance.

Cincinnati needs a win and Denver to lose and Miami to lose or tie.

Miami needs a win and Denver to lose.

Regardless if the Lions win tonight, the winner of next week’s Lions-Vikings game clinches the division and gets a first round bye while the loser gets the 5th seed and plays the first round on the road. If the Lions win tonight, they would also clinch with a tie against the Vikings next week. If the Lions lose or tie tonight, the Vikings would clinch with a tie next week. Given the unlikeliness of ties, the game tonight is almost completely meaningless.

The Falcons had horrendous clock management at the end of both halves.

In my FFL Finale, one team has two DET players and is ahead by 8, and they might not play. Other team has DET kicker and will play, assuming he’s needed forca few FGs

I’ve got Gibbs and down by 2. Hoping he plays enough for my win.

Oof. Good luck! We did our championship last week in one of my leagues to avoid these scenarios. Seems to me like adding an 18th game to the regular season would be a mistake. I’m sure they’ll end up doing it though, because $

That makes sense. So in theory, their top players could rest both tonight and in two weeks time.

On the other side, I wonder if the top players for the chiefs might play for some of the game next week because having two weeks off in a row might make them rusty.
