2024 NFL Football Thread

In retrospect, the deal was an F— for the Broncos, but most people thought it made sense 2 years ago. He was entering his age 34 year and mid-late 30’s has still been prime (or close) for a lot of the recent greats.

Don’t see it that way. More than half of league is set (their perspective and cap space). 3 teams have top picks, 2 are likely to resign their QB from last year and one doesn’t have a second rounder unless Jax resigns Ridley by next week.

Teams considered set: NYJ, Buf, Mia, Bal, Cincy, Cle, Hou, Indy, Jax, KC, LAC, Phi, Dal, Det, GB, Car, SF, Az, LAR (19)

Min and TB likely resign QBs, top 3 teams in draft need QB.

Sea/NYG wildcards. Have QBs signed and look like they are committed. Sea doesn’t have a 2.

Leaves 6 teams: Pit, Den (no 2), LV, Ten, NO, ATL (no second rounder)

Total group w second rounder that may believe he’s not their guy is 4 teams. NO may also be set for this year w Carr and Ten might think Levis is guy leaving Pit and LV as needs AND having a 2 assuming Cousins and Mayfield resign.

I never did, but I was glad that DEN thought so.

He was not in the same league as a lot of recent greats. I don’t think he will make the HoF.

ATL currently has a second round pick. They may even have 2, conditional on whether JAX extends Ridley before the new league year starts.

Mixed it up. So there are 3 teams in mix. Pittsburgh not sure if they are banking on Pickett or moving on, potentially with someone like Wilson as backup. Long story short, there are only 2-4 teams in the mix seriously.

I should have said “mid-late 30’s has still been prime a lot of the recent greats / really goods”. He’s somewhere in that “does he belong in the HOF” tier (Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Matt Ryan, etc.).

I agree this is the general conversation, but to me one of these things just doesn’t belong.

Does Matt Ryan belong in the “1 MVP, 1 embarrassing super bowl loss, but otherwise not consistently great” tier (Cam Newton, Rich Gannon)?

So Wilson played not a single down of the extension he signed with the DEN in 2022. Got his bonus, though.

(Hey, that hurts!!)

I guess the players, probably exposed away more than a fan, would have gotten frostbite? Or was movement, and those nice, warm blanket-coats and heaters that saved them?

The Athletic has made their projections of how the QB carousel sorts out. But before the results, here is how they described each team situation:

Locked in, nothing to see here: Bills, Bengals, Lions, Chargers, Eagles, Ravens, Jaguars, Packers, Chiefs, Cowboys, 49ers, Jets, Rams, Texans

Safe, but with something to prove: Saints, Cardinals, Browns

Young, unaccomplished, but safe: Colts, Panthers

Young, unaccomplished, but probably safe: Titans

TBD: Giants, Seahawks

Open for business: Bears, Broncos, Buccaneers, Commanders, Falcons, Patriots, Raiders, Steelers, Vikings

I might have put a different label on the “Safe but with something to prove” category: Stuck. All 3 have QB’s they might prefer to move on from but have a contract situation that makes it impossible at the moment.

Here’s where they think everybody lands:

Bears: Caleb Williams
Buccaneers: Mayfield
Falcons: Cousins
Vikings: Darnold and Zach Wilson
Broncos: Howell
Commanders: May
daRaidas: Jayden Daniels (via trade up with the Pats)
Pats: Brissett and Nix
Steelers: Pickett and Tannehill
Seahawks: Geno Smith and Penix
Giants: Jones and McCarthy

Their other predictions: Browns trade for Fields to back up Watson
Colts sign Russell Wilson as backup
Lions extend Goff
Jets sign Minshew as backup
Rams sign Flacco as backup
Eagles sign T Taylor as backup
Texans sign Garoppolo as backup

My take on a few items above: if the Browns trade for Fields as a backup, they can’t be willing to pay much for him as they won’t want to exercise his 5th year option given Watson’s contract
I could also see Rams drafting a developmental QB, as Stafford is starting to get up there
I don’t know about choosing Darnold to start. If I were MIN I’d rather have Wilson on a 1 year deal
Mac Jones may be permanently broken with the coordinators he’s been through, but they don’t mention him

Probably this. Also getting to go inside and warm up at half time.

Vikes going with Darnold + Z.Wilson sounds WAY too good to be true. No way they are THAT dumb.

Yeah, that seems weak. I’d want any of the backups they suggest get signed above over either one of those 2.

good gravy. Brissett is always mentioned as a solid guy. he is also not a solid QB. he is not a plan. i’d rather watch another year of MacJ and Zappe hour than pretend Brissett is the answer to anything

Pats reportedly trading Mac Jones to the Jagoffs for a 6th round pick.

That’s a pretty low return.

Rapoport says Tampa is close to finalizing extension with Mayfield. $100M over 3 years with $50 guaranteed

wonder if the jags will pick up his 5th yr option at 25.6M along with lawrence’s.

that draft - lawrence, z wilson, lance, fields, mac. you could argue mac was 2nd or 3rd. but 4th is AWFUL and 5th is INC.
