2024 NFL Football Thread

Fields’ manager posted a video that is causing speculation that a deal with Atlanta is in the works.

There are too many teams who need qbs for him not to start in 2024. Sounds like people think the Steelers are most likely but not ruling out Falcons, Patriots, Raiders and Vikings.

Just saying, he’s just not that good anymore. Top 32? Maybe. Worthy of trading for? Nothing valuable, that’s for sure. Teams will wait until he gets released.

KC Chiefs: great place to win, shitty place to work.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt ranked last out of 32 team owners. Those grades were based on what players perceived as a willingness to invest in the team’s facilities. The Chiefs ranked 26th in the food/cafeteria category, 31st in the nutritionist/dietician category, 31st in training room and 32nd in training staff.

“To me, this is not a shaming exercise,” NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell said. “We want to highlight teams that are doing well but also highlight areas for improvement.”

The Chiefs stand out because they ranked poorly in many of the same categories last year. One specific criticism that Chiefs players had was that they had stools instead of actual chairs in their locker room, and the team did switch to chairs, according to the NFLPA.

Chiefs players also said they were promised after the 2022 season that the locker room would be renovated and it was not. According to the NFLPA, players were told their Super Bowl run extended the season so long that the team didn’t have enough time in the offseason to make renovations.

Seems the reason players stay is Andy Reid, the top-ranked head coach in the survey.

They came for Andy Reid. They stayed for the cheeseburgers.

he is absolutely top 32. have you seen the guys 21-32? that is cover your eyes awful. if he is just “not that good” then he is at worst 24th and maybe as high as 18th or so (not scientific).

not worth trading for bc he will be released and you can try him for a year at 1.2M! if you could, offer him guarantees for 2025 that vest based on wins or playing time I’d maybe try that too. but 5 teams for sure will look at him (4 after someone signs cousins).

Top is MIA and MIN. MIN cannot do anything about that weather, though. Good thing “weather” is not part of the survey (or is it?).

I like how the owners are very put out about this survey being publicized, when they would prefer to control the narrative (if not the data themselves) themselves by creating a joint survey with the NFLPA.

Last year’s survey rankled many of the teams that graded poorly and didn’t set well at the league office, which felt it didn’t get enough notice of the survey before its release. That appears to be the case again this year.

“The league and its clubs always encourage and solicit player feedback to help improve all facets of their NFL experience,” NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said. “We look forward to getting the opportunity to review the union’s questionnaire, and the data supporting it, after its release to the media. When we first learned of the survey yesterday, we took the opportunity again to invite the union to join the NFL in a rigorous and third-party scientific-based survey as we have previously done and is mandated by the collective bargaining agreement.”

“Jeez, don’t air our dirty laundry without giving us a chance to clean it!”

Also, guessing that the owners really want to know WHO is disgruntled so as to punish them.

Eh. He gets a year older and a year further from his SB cred every year. While that is “something you can’t teach” it is also something that he cannot re-create with his own talent. Heck, some or his own (current and former) teammates don’t even like him.
That said, he would prefer to be on a winning team, “here or elsewhere,” and that means backing up.
Heck, The Jets should take a look at him. Their owner said last year they didn’t have a backup QB, you know, the one who finished a supermajority of the first game and started 11 more afterward. But one asks, why didn’t you have a backup QB? You fucking own the team. Get one! In case of, you know, an injury.
Competent backup QBs are going to become a critical part of an NFL Football team. Should always have been, as you want someone to push the starter to stay top-level, and you want this backup to push himself to be better.

russ seems detached from the reality the rest of the world experiences. in a lot of ways. should he be open to backing up? yes. jets would be a good example. but…he thinks he still has it. he won’t lead a team to the title, but he can be part of an ok team and help them if he minimizes errors and has good pieces around him. he would make PIT better i think (compared to the steaming pile they tried last year).

Russ needs to focus on football, not brand and TikTok. It is a choice to be a world class athlete or social media influencer. If he wants to be a teammate, he still has arm strength and mobility. He wasn’t known for taking too many direct shots. Right coach, he could bounce back.

There are good choices for starter:
ATL offense is good
LV has Adams
Pit has WR and D
Min has JJ
NE could draft Harrison at 3
NO is Carr better?
TB if he signs for $1M, they have $$ to spend

Backup on good team w good chance to see field at some point
Balt
Cincy
Cleveland
Miami
Indy

If Raiders want to return to past glory, this is a good start. He could be Plunkett or Gannon

While ATL is certainly possible for Wilson, I think it won’t happen. They just went through the cycle of hire a stopgap guy (Mariota) while trying to develop a youngster under him (Ridder). I think they avoid the stopgap hire.

I might take Wilson over Carr straight up, and definitely would for the $ on a new Wilson deal. Carr still has a monster dead cap number and the Saints are already way over the cap, so I think they are mostly forced to stick with him for at least 1 more year.

Jerry Jones’ alleged daughter asking for something, I can’t figure it out. Someone can help me maybe with some Texas laws?

What I read is that this “daughter” wants to void a legal agreement which allowed her to receive payments from Jones as long as the “daughter” and her mom kept the identity of the father’s (Jones, allegedly) name quiet.

Now, she’s already received payments, according to Jones’ attorneys. Millions. So, not sure why voiding this agreement helps, and compelling Jones to take a paternity test and exposing his alleged extramarital affairs, which are now already exposed and Jones is not all that humiliated? Would she get even more? Does she want to be included in the will? Does she want a job with the Dallas Cowboys like her “siblings”? Does she want to harass The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders with impunity like the “brother”?

She has the entitlement traits of a rich spoiled Jones. Must be in the blood.

The cuckhold Tom Brady…

The consensus amongst Chicago Bears followers seems to be that the Bears will take Caleb WIlliams #1 and trade Justin Fields.

There are fanboys here that want the Bears to take Marvin Harrison #1 and keep Fields. I don’t see that happening, even though I don’t think that idea is terrible.

My wish is for them to trade down out of the #1 to try and manipulate getting a Top 10 OT (like Joe Alt) and a top 10 tier receiver (like Rome Odunze), then address the defense in later rounds.

The question is what will Fields command on the trade market, and the current belief is that he’s worth a second rounder this year and a deferred second rounder. which is consistent with prior NFL trades involving Sam Darnold and Alex Smith, two underperforming 1st round QBs.

Diana Russini says the market for Fields is “soft for now” as it appears clubs may be prioritizing other signings. In particular there’s buzz that ATL wants Cousins.

There are more needy teams than QB available, so it should eventually shake out. CHI might have to wait a bit until free agency opens.

Russell Wilson thanked for his shitty service in DEN.
Very different send-off from SEA.

Here is where DEN went wrong:

March 16, 2022: Wilson was formally introduced following a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks. Denver gave up five draft picks and three starters in exchange for Wilson and a draft pick.

“This is a gift for me. I’m so grateful to be around such amazing people,” Wilson said. "My goal is to play 10 or 12 more years and hopefully win three or four more Super Bowls. That’s the plan. That’s the mindset.‘’

Broncos general manager George Paton said, "It’s just unique you can trade for a franchise quarterback in his prime.‘’

Um, sorry, he was not in his prime.

And, not really a team player by not adjusting his contract for salary cap purposes in order to improve the team, perhaps with a better O-Line, so he could play longer. Same thing happened in SEA when he got overpaid.
Who’d want a player like that? I mean, he got paid his guarantee, maybe he will humbly accept the pay cut to play.
Maybe he should get creative and sign for a backup job on the condition that he gets X million dollars every time he starts.

Alex Smith had more success. Salary cap is a bigger deal now for QB salaries. Fields likely not getting 2 2s for the Bears. Might not get current 2.

Which means no organizations view him as a legitimate franchise QB…

From Andrew Brandt:

Russell Wilson is owed $39M in cash in 2024, offset by whatever he makes from another team.
He’ll also count $35M and $50M on Broncos Cap in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
