Because Jared Goff is worth $53M per year. I don’t care if it is backloaded and he’ll never make the highlight number. TOO MUCH.
That’s the going rate for good QBs these days. You can argue how good Goff is, but the lions are decent for the first time in forever and that’s the cost they need to pay not to blow it up 2 years after they finally make the playoffs.
Personally I think Goff is better than a lot of people give him credit for. Will be interesting to see what happens once their OC gets poached for a HC job though.
He’s probably not. But he is one of 5 QBs making more than $50M annually I belive and none of the 5 have won a SB.
There are another 8 making between 40M - 50M and only Mahomes & Stafford have rings among them.
Then there are another 3 making between $30 and 40M with only Rodgers having a Ring among those.
That’s half the league making between Baker Mayfield’s $33.5M annually and Joe Burrows $55M. And those numbers aren’t likely to go go down anytime soon.
But it seems you are either on a rookie deal, you are getting paid back up money or you are making bank.
Because, paying a QB too much is not how a team wins a Super Bowl.
It is known.
I don’t recall if Mahomes was still on his rookie deal in 2020 but the last 6 winning QBs were: Brady (NE), Mahomes, Brady (TB), Stafford, Mahomes, Mahomes. I think all were paid pretty well though Brady and Mahomes were both known to structure deals in a way that were at least cap friendly to the team or outright savings to spend in other areas.
True dat. Better to pay the Roquan Smiths.
Better way would be to build an O-line, which will attract a star QB who won’t ask for the moon. One problem with this is that a good O-Line won’t last forever, so replenishing is important/imperative.
Just build that O-line and maybe in 20 years you’ll find one of these.
