Belgium vs. Romania was an entertaining game to watch, but yet another the finger of the player from the first knuckle to the tip was beyond the last defender, and it didn’t impact the play in any way or truly give the player an advantage in scoring - but, rules are rules, it’s offsides and the goal doesn’t count call reminds me how much I hate VAR / how offsides is now defined / both.
Which, I think it’s interesting that in athletics track events, you can have both arms extended in a full reach over the finish line and it doesn’t matter; the order of finish is determined by the runner’s torso. Then I remember in football - real football, not soccer - we don’t require players to get any part of their body in the end zone, merely getting any part of the ball over the goal line works. So, it’s not the dumbest rule on the books in pro sports, but I still hate how it’s defined
There is no competitive advantage conferred in many of the situations where a soccer offside is called. Hockey handles offsides better: both feet have to be over the blue line before the puck arrives for an offside to be called. Something comparable would make more sense in soccer.
Nominated for Worst Offside Complaint by an American.
Not “offsides.” Even in Throw-and-Carry-Ball, the rule is Offside.
Arms down to the fingers are not considered in Offside Position, a necessary component to calling Offside.
VAR helps catch players cheating.
You don’t appear to know the Offside Law, Law 11, available online for free.
It is designed to make sure that players and teams earn their goals, and not laze around off their side, not being athletic, waiting for the ball to come. Basketball allows that. And it is boring.
Very similar call tonight in ATL vs STL. In both cases there was a player in offside position but it was questionable whether it affected the keeper. Unlike the play above it appeared to me Guzan did look towards the offside player. He likely wasn’t getting there anyway, but did that peek make a difference? Would have thought the offside call on the field would stand as not a clear and obvious error on that judgment call. It did not, but it didn’t matter as they called another foul on the buildup when reviewing the entire attack.
I see that Croatia gave up two equalizing goals during stoppage time in their last two games. Either win would have put them through but now it’s virtually impossible.
If Denmark gets a goal and England held to a draw, that side could have England and Belgium as well. That could really be the top 6 on one side. Go Denmark!
England’s lineup is not one that looks like it fits together right. Foden is different when he’s not playing alongside Haaland and KDB. Kane is not what he used to be and Conor Gallagher can’t score. They should be playing Palmer more, get a little more pace from Bowen and definitely be playing Alex-Arnold.
