ok, #1 done
After Week 12:
Three Big 10 (four in the top 11)
Three SEC (five in the top 11)
One ACC (one in top 11)
One Big 12 (zero in the top 11, thanks BYU! /r)
One ND, now at #6.
Highest not Power 4 team/champion (BSU at #13)
Two other highest-ranked Power 4 teams, which are right now an SEC and Big10 team. UTenn at #10 is getting bumped, as BSU now in #12 and a Big12 team outside the Top 11 will be in.
My bro-in-law, USC honk (didnât attend) is hosting the USC-UCLA game at his house (he and his friends (not all USC honks, cuz thereâs always one, and no they didnât attend UCLA or ND or USC, either) have in the past gone to the Rose Bowl and sat on the golf course watching from the large screen TV they brought).
So, that is a late game (on NBC?!?). I told him Iâd be there at 9AM for the IU-tOSU game (and MCI-TOT), followed by absolutely nothing (SEA play LAK in NHL at 1PM on Local Cable), then USMC-ND, then maybe Iâll stay for the USC-UCLA game.

From Sep 10:
Pretty close. Would drop an ACC for ND, which, as DP said, is nearly the same, since ND plays 5 ACC teams, and has beaten them all. So, a perfect prediction.
Interesting take on BYUâs drop. Not sure I fully understand what he is saying though. We donât penalize for close wins but BYU had a couple close wins before their loss so that is why we dropped them?
CFP selection committee chair Warde Manuel acknowledged on a conference call with reporters Tuesday night that the Cougarsâ âtough loss at homeâ following several close wins, particularly against SMU, Utah and Oklahoma State â combined with âa great win against Kansas Stateâ â led to BYUâs ultimately precipitous drop in the rankings.
âIt was just something the committee had been monitoring all along,â said Manuel, who is also the athletic director at Michigan. âLook, we give a lot of credit when teams win, and so we donât penalize teams for winning close or winning too big ⌠but we do value wins, so thatâs where we saw BYU. But given some of those games that they played and the close wins that they had, it just was an indicator that some of the teams that were below them in the rankings last week should move ahead of them is how the committee assessed BYU.â
Uh, we donât, but then we do.
In short, they have not played anyone of consequence and should have won every game they played. Oh yeah, and that team BYU beat, SMU (now on top of the ACC): theyâre now better than BYU.
So, when they beat whoever in the Big12 Championship Game, they will be the one team from the Big 12 that goes on to the payoffs while the rest lose money playing in bowl games.
Then again, if they lose to ASU this weekend, their spot in the Big 12 Championship Game is in jeopardy, baby, oo-oo-oo-oo.
Might be the game to watch in the 12:30PM PST time slot.
Also, they didnât mention close losses. I wonder if Boise Stâs close loss to Oregon (the only time they played a ranked opponent) puts them higher than BYU.
Their methodology seems more like, âwhat is their record the last four games?â I.e., they donât seem to go back very far. Case in Point: ND.
Ah, the goldfish memory problem.
Itâs like âwhat was this guy like when he was president?â âI canât remember, it was more than four weeks agoâ
Actually, I believe that was mentioned in his complete statement as to why Boise St. is so high.
Here is a link to the opinion article that I got those quotes from. I had a little trouble finding it when I first posted.
What a weird season for Kansas. They were in a total tailspin, and just knocked off 3 ranked teams in a row. Apparently a team with a losing record beating 3 ranked teams in a row hasnât happened before in the FBS
Not sure it is a âpull down the goalpostâ win.
You Americans seem to pull down the goalpost in a different situation than we do it in Canada. Another example of American exceptionalism?
We also flip cars and set them on fire
All about the Critical Mass
The losses of other SEC teams down the stretch could hurt UGA as they have now backed into the SEC championship game. Theyâd be a lock for the playoffs today, but if they lose the championship game will they make the playoffs with 3 losses?
Yes. And 5 other SEC teams should get in with 3 losses, because it speaks to the depth of the SEC.
Also, Notre Dame should be no worse than a 3-seed after running a gauntlet that includes Army, Navy, Virginia, Georgia Tech and Florida State. And really, the Irish - the de facto champions of the ACC - should be invited to play the winner of Oregon / Ohio State for the B1G title game as part of unifying the conference championship titles, before we get to the other playoff involving 11 other schools.
