Not sure how those stories are considered “below-the-belt” if they are just highlighting the painful truth of the effects of Republican policy choices.
Yeah, I see a difference between Republicans and their anti-abortion efforts and a response of “I’m 12 and Republicans are forcing me to give birth” and Democrats who support some pro-choice measure that protects the life of the mother and a response of “Democrats want to kill murder babies across America.”
True. It’s not even below-the-belt, it’s just negative attack ads. That one is 100% truthful. “Republicans in the House failed to pass a bipartisan bill to defend Israel against Hamas” is also truthful, albeit ignoring context a little while the abortion one is just the result of their shitty policy.
Sounds hopeful that some stop gap funding will kick this can into 2024 but Freedumb caucus is trying to torpedo it.
paging Lauren Boebert…
A total of 209 Democrats voted with 127 Republicans in support of the measure, which needed a two-thirds majority to pass using an expedited process. (93) Ninety-three Republicans voted against their new leader’s plan, along with (2) two Democrats.
Sounds like shutdown is averted through the end of t he calendar year at least, as the Senate is expected to approve and Biden likely to sign but no clue if that means the Republican face eating leopards will turn on their new speaker over this.
They say they won’t because they realize they have no one else who can herd all of them together, but I don’t think that’s a deterrent to a few of them. Obviously watching my posts in this thread and a couple others I’m a poor guesser at what House Republicans will do, but I’d be kind of surprised if someone decides to kneecap Johnson before the November elections.
Dumb question: when the federal government shuts down, what happens to the health insurance of all the furloughed workers who get their insurance through the government (i.e. their employer)?
Twice I’ve been engaged to federal workers during shutdowns but they were healthy and I forgot to ask what happened to their insurance. (Or I asked and forgot the answer.)
I assume that they must keep paying the premiums, no? Including the employee portion?
Below are some of the amendments that were voted on last night. Note that Bob Good (R-VA, Liberty University graduate) proposed 3 amendments totaling < $100 million to cut minority health care. If you think that that is one of the top 100 things that needs to be addressed in the CR, you may be a racist. Note: he’s not on any committees that have anything to do with health, so it isn’t like he is a subject matter expert with personal pet peeves.
Also it looks like of this crap, defunding OSHA actually received debate.

Item 33 – it looks like health insurance continues for up to 365 days of shutdown. The government advances furloughed employees a portion of their salary equal to their portion of the health insurance premium.
Alright, I’m not surprised the GOP wants to slash aid targeted at minorities as well as higher education. Having more living Black people or educated people is bad for their future prospects. I also get cutting NIH funding, since they now have a much larger base of anti-vaxxers who hate Fauci et. al., so they can tout getting back at the evil government for offering you optional vaccines.
But why cut OSHA? Is this just a continuation of the “14 year olds can work in meat processing plants” mentality? Return of child labor, minimal regulations, minimal safety, because capitalism?
Yes. It’s “government is interfering with capitalism and the right of employers and employees to decide the working conditions they both want to enjoy.” It’s trying to shrink down the size of government but getting rid of irrelevant, onerous departments and freeing up that money to go to the military … not for improved housing and improved salaries and improved training equipment and such, but for more tanks, bombers and other weapons.
Letting 14 year olds work in factories is just a small part of the bigger picture
But if your 14-year-old boy wants to wear a dress, that’s the real problem
Maybe they got a call from Elon Musk
Actually I found the reason. She’s an anti-vaxxer and is mad at Biden, therefore, defund OSHA.
Not understanding how illnesses and vaccines work:
We’re going to shoot illegal border crossers:
Lol Hunter was convicted for this:
Biden personally invented the concept of drug dealers and illegal immigration:
As it’s polite to speak nicely about others, I’ll give her the most glowing review I can muster: She’s a vapid moron.
No, you don’t have to give her a glowing review. She’s praised Hitler in the past and then gave a half-assed “sorry that got out, but ackshually …” statement about it, and constituents in her area ate that shit up because it pwned the libs and shit like that.
Fixed
Interesting, so the Senate passed a stopgap measure that takes them to days past the IA primary.
So we’ll be having this same situation leading right up to the beginning of elections. The GOP already got pretty wrecked in public opinion last time. Probably the Senate and RNC will do their best to slap the House upside their head while individual candidates run on shutting the government down. Because Congress is unpopular, but individual candidates can still say stupid things like “Fire government employees based on SS#” and get support for it.
To be fair, the guy who said that is not in Congress, has never been elected to anything, and appears to be losing popularity. He was in the second position on stage in the first debate and on the third position on stage in the third debate, neither of which featured Trump. (I didn’t watch the second debate.)
Was reminded today by this news about Speaker Johnson that the first budget expiration is January 19th. Who’s ready for another shutdown standoff??
Anyway, apparently some Christians do purity balls, where the daughter attends with her father and is to sign a contract that she will not have sex before marriage. Per Johnson’s wife:
We don’t talk to her about contraception. Sex before marriage is simply out of the question.
