I imagine I don’t have any bills, so I don’t do anything to prepare for the possibility that they occur.
T minus 25 days and counting (I think)
I’m still not a fan of Johnson, but I will say at least he hasn’t shut the government down, low bar I know but still.
yet. HIs deal is substantially the same as prior one that set the hardliners off last time.
Looks like another CR about to pass to kick that can down the road a bit more.
Boy, that 2-tier approach was pure genius. No one could have predicted that it would have resulted in foot-dragging and a last-minute CR. We instead get a new 2-tier approach of March 1 and March 8.
I wonder how this will get solved?
With SOTU date of March 7, in between the deadlines. This won’t be a circus at all.
Doesn’t the government need to shutdown to install updates?
Well March pushes it past the election / installation of new Congress (and possibly POTUS but hopefully not). Maybe both sides expect to make gains in the election?
March of 2024, not 2025.
Why stop at 2 tiers? Let’s make it a thousand tiers! Reapprove every budget allocation every year! /s
Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 - this just passed the House, near as I can tell tax breaks for Business got extended to make Republicans happy and child tax credit got increased and expanded to make Democrats happy and it sailed through with wide bi-partisan support with some exceptions from the extreme wing of both party and some hold outs who wanted larger SALT deductions included.
I assume it will have similar support in the Senate and be signed by Biden.
But does this end the government shutdown talk for the rest of 24 or are they still hashing that out and kicking it down the road a couple months each time?
They’re going to kick the can one or more two times, then punt it to like 1/4/25 with promises of “in 2025, we’re really going to get serious about controlling government spending” unless Trump takes back the White House, in which case all the concerns over government spending will disappear in an instant.
to be fair, if Trump takes back the White House I think a lot of peoples concerns won’t be about govt spending.
With one of the spending deadlines having been pushed to March 1, do you a) spend the next two weeks trying to fix it, or b) finish the week tomorrow (Thursday) at 2:30 pm, then recess until Feb. 28?
If you picked b), then you might be a member of Republican leadership.
It only looks last minute, but they’ll have plenty of time with the leap day /s
Continuing resolution with a new deadline coming in 15 days..
Partial shutdown coming on Friday unless something is agreed to. Current Republican proposal:
These are not people who are serious about governing.
It seems odd for them to propose digging in on that one 1947 law when it wasn’t a problem for at least the last 4 presidents, R or D.
