2023 NFL Football thread

One would hope . . . but I can see where some might just view that as a “slap on the wrist” and not change their ways.

I’m trying to remember if they still get paid while suspended.

Salaries are not paid while suspended. Teams also have the option of recovering the prorated signing bonus for the year they are suspended as well.

At this point I also think removing the guarantee from future salaries after a suspension is also standard in most contracts (I think this use to be one the points that players/teams could negotiate in the rookie contracts).

Only if you get caught!

And this becomes the rub.

the min-year suspension suggests nfl bets, right? others with shorter penalties were gambling on site but not on nfl I thought.

it seems clear to me as an outsider, but the league has a lot of work to do on this front.

The NFL made their bed, and now they’re sleeping in it

Eric Bieniemy bringing winning to Commanders, and the players are concerned about its being too intense.

Bieniemy needs to hope he gets time to find players who do want to win. Probably not, though, cuz Commanders, cuz black. Out by Week 13.

I’ll take the over on that. Not sure how much the fans will put on the OC for not winning with… checks notes… Sam Howell at QB

Rivera might get tossed and EB elevated. Not great when the coach makes a slight on head coaching experience and making it sound critical when the offense hasn’t been in top 20 in 6 years. Gibson seems to get it. When a veteran says he’s in the best shape in a long while that sounds like they were not prepared. He didn’t say practices had too much contact. They ran more plays and were preparing.

I think @Cooke warned us about this kid’s ability

Thanks for this. Hope Rourke gets a chance to play occasionally during the season.

I am old enough to remember when the CFL was able to compete financially with the NFL for top talent but that ended over 50 years ago. Rourke will make much more as a third string QB with the Jaguars than he would make as the best starting QB in the CFL.

I may have some Falcons games available this season. Will know in another week or 2. Hit me up if interested

Entertainment Forum, maybe? Anyway, it’s about a football player so here goes:

Looking forward to the sequel: “Blind-Sided: The True Story of Michael Oher.”

It always seemed like a complete “white savior” fabrication.

Hopefully the courts are able to provide us with the truth.
Really looks like that family took advantage of him and exploited his naivety for their own gain.

They always seemed like horrible people.

Jets sign Dalvin Cook - am I missing something? Looks like he had a solid 2022 and with Breece coming off ACL, I am thrilled to have him.

He valued himself more than the NFL values running backs.
And sadly is likely on the backside of his career.

I am ok with that, Breece should be the primary, if healthy, but both should get plenty of touches

Being solid doesn’t quite cut it as a RB getting paid 15m/yr. 8-9m short term seems like a decent deal. Running backs going from really good to terrible quickly seems to have scared a lot of teams off from signing an upper 20’s RB to a moderate contract.

I think Cook is still good, but he of course could fall off at any time given his age. A 1 year deal is good for the NYJ as it comes with little risk.

At that price, I imagine this is a RBBC assuming both guys stay healthy

I think it’s less about going from really good to awful than the fact that there is just not a strong reason to pay running backs. Most of the league has come around to the understanding that rushing game is far more correlated to the strength of your line than the strength of your running back. And the marginal cost of a “stud RB” to an average RB is not worth it. So teams are happy to have studs on rookie contracts, but once that is up and they have to pay them market value, they’d rather just take average or another rookie.

The issue is with market value. Because RB is historically a very prominent position. Gets the touchdowns. The yards. The name recognition. The players have historically had some success turning that into a higher market value. But the jig is up. I think this will slowly correct over time and market value expectations will come down to the point where teams will be able to resign their local stud rookie and everyone will be a bit happier with the arrangement. Albeit RBs will be getting paid much less relatively.
