Shoulda been a kicker

Many kickers in the CFL have a second job to supplement their kicker earnings. Come to think of it, probably only CFL QB’s make enough to live really well. CFL players bolt to any NFL team that will have them.

E-I-E-I-O…

$2MM average doesn’t seem too bad in an absolute sense. Sucks that even a kicker is valued more, in the relative sense.

I think the worst thing for the RB is the lack of longevity of the RB (which, I assume, is one of the major reasons Josh Jacobs gets only a one year offer, and not the long term deal he’s looking for.) So, yeah, if you blow through your $2MM or $4MM or $6MM or however long you are able to last, you’ll have to actually do something with the remaining 40 years of your life other than blowing through your $2MM or $4MM or $6MM or whatever.

I might write an Annoyed Thoughts about how sports commentators are forever saying “but they need to make their entire lifetime income in those 2 or 3 years!” as an excuse for why they should get more money. F that. Get a f’ing job.

There are Lies, Damn Lies, and Analytics!
No one wants to pay for such a risk. And, I’m guessing that no insurer is willing to insure the contract, either.

But is their lack of longevity an issue of disability where they are disabled to the point of not being able to work at that job or at any job?

And when you think about it, they probably have a significantly shorter expected future lifetime than normal people too. So they won’t have to work till they are 60-65 cause they’ll be dead.

Yup. “mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be Dallas Cowboys…”

Hmm. That makes me wonder. Does the knee damage and resultant lack of longevity actually save them some from the more insidious brain trauma in the long run?

Much better fit than SB MVP

I don’t know where else to put this, so I will document my Justin Fields opinion here.

Clearly, as the 2023 NFL sits on the coming horizon, there’s a lot of pressure on the Bears to be better than last year, and nobody bears (pun intended) more responsibility than Justin Fields.

Here’s what I expect for Justin Fields for upcoming year. Failure to meet these marks means, to me, that Fields needs to be jettisoned and the search for a competent QB-of-the-future resumed.

Bear minimums (again, pun intended)

64% completion percentage
90 QB rating
7.2 Yards per attempt
220 Passing yards per game
1.5 passing TD’s per game
1.0 INT’s per game (maximum)
Averaging at least 10 passing 1st downs per game
Rushing attempts must end in a slide, a step out of bounds, or a TD.
Hit the 300 passing yard mark in a game, at least once.

I think getting all of these puts Fields in consideration of being roughly QB14 through QB19 in the league - in other words, at least an average NFL starter, not necessarily a pro-bowler… I don’t really care about rushing yard totals. I don’t want him to take frequent hits from LB’s and safeties like a RB does.

He needs to work more on his defense, based on Da Bears’ last season.

I don’t understand your meaning.

The Bears defense started out OK last year. Then they traded away multiple significant players during the season, and they regressed.

For my whole lifetime, whenever the Bears have been good in a season, they have had average offense and stellar defense. I think it would be fun to see a Bears team that was above average on offense and just average on defense. IE built to win games 35-28 and not built to win games 17-10.

The heralded 85 Bears of my youth had a terrible passing game- No good QB and no good receivers. They were built to successfully run the ball 30 times a game, and to have the defense demoralize and destroy opposing offenses.

Per Field Yates at ESPN

“Broncos DE Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. He is out for at least this full season.”

Its mind boggling that players are still doing this.

Maybe they didn’t think anyone was enforcing it.
Even worse is that others know it’s against the rules and will use that to make them do even more wrong things.

A lot of kids thinking that there’s a ** Wink Wink Nudge Nudge ** implied to those items of "Don’t do these things; they’re against NFL policy.

I’m going to guess that it’s going to take someone getting released before it really sinks in for many of them.

There have been enough suspensions that you’d think it would already be clear it is being enforced.
