We have some Henckels steak knives, all steel, serrated. Nice but not super $$$, I put them in the dishwasher. Now our other knives are Henckels four star, and one Wusthof, always hand wash. They are 24 years old and good as new.
I just bought some new butchering type knives, and sharpened up all the ones I already had. Rather than rattling around in the drawer, I bought a knife roll. And…the knives sliced through the knife roll. So I made some paper knife sleeves and then put them into the knife roll.
I’ll still probably put them in the dishwasher to clean because I think it cleans well, but we have a top tray for knives like that.
It’s bread and sugar: two components that I like. Yet this particular combination is God-awful.
Clearly this is a minority opinion though as three of the four Thanksgivings I attended featured these monstrosities. More room on my plate for everything else!
My recollection is dishwasher detergent is very abrasive, to get stuck on food off, so it dulls the blade edge. Doesn’t matter for cheap knives, but will shorten knife lifespan.
My SO nearly bought some when we were at Costco because we were assigned to supply the bread rolls for a Thanksgiving dinner that included 14 children under the age of 12. I didn’t want to be responsible for contributing to any lifelong sugar addictions so I found a much better alternative in the bakery section without all the sugar (and the excessively futuristic best by date).
I brought homemade bread to one of the Thanksgivings (the largest one), so I just ate my homemade bread thank you very much. I just didn’t have bread at the others.
