I think I missed those before, for exactly the same reason. After guessing chile, direction shows as south, not southeast. I realize they only have 8 directions, and I guess they have to use geographic center to geographic center, but I think they ought to use diagonals when there is a significant difference each direction, especially when distance to closest point would be non-diagonal.
