The streak on the daily puzzle is based on solving the puzzle for the day regardless of number of attempts. The streak resets when you can’t solve the puzzle at all or you do not play. The random puzzle streak resets when you lose a game.
130 points. Paused significantly after loading game before guessing, and had no issues. 130 points that should have been 160. Fat finger syndrome hit a wrong key, when the intended key was correct. That wasn’t my last letter, so not 100% that I would not have tried that wrong letter later, but probably not.
That is ok. Since you hit that wrong key, I was able to tie you! 4 strikes today for me. Apple is taking a while to approve the new version of the app. I think they were all hands on deck trying to fix and get out the major security flaw that was found. Update your devices if you don’t have auto-update on.
I downloaded it today. I’ll try to keep up with the daily puzzles for a while
Apple just approved the latest version of the app (v1.3). Hopefully, this will fix the issue you have been having if you update it before you use it next time. I also added where you can go back and see the daily puzzle once you have completed it. I also fixed it so you don’t have to play a random puzzle or shut down the app from day to day to see the new daily puzzle.
I don’t understand the app store. It told me I have 15 apps that needed updating, but the list didn’t include Word of the Ring. So I updated them all. Then it told me nothing needed updating. So I went (in the App Store) and it agreed that I could update to version 1.3. So I did. Let’s hope it works tomorrow.
As promised, version 1.3 does let me see today’s game.
Now if I just understood updates on my IMAC. This is in the corner of the screen
And if I put the cursor over it, I get options, which brings up
I can go to the App Store on the IMAC, and this is what it shows me under for Updates
Two things updated recently. Nothing available to update. So what does that message in the corner of the screen (the first message posted here)_want to update?
That is the update that I mentioned for the device itself. Apple found a security flaw and is recommending everyone update. I already did all my devices manually, but if you have it set up to auto update, it will do it tonight.
100 points today, with 5 strikes. Same points as if 6 strikes, and fewer than after 7 or 8. (In all those score counts, after watching an ad after 5 and another after 7 if 7 reached)
Today I did 4 strikes. Actually got all but a few letters with no strikes and then used 4 to get those last few. Will take a look at the scoring system at some point. Open to suggestions. I am sure actuaries would have a field day trying to come up with the perfect scoring system. It does have to work for both the word of the day and the random puzzles. In random puzzles, you don’t get to go back and do the same puzzle over if you don’t get it and right now there are no bonuses (although my wife is advocating a bonus when you solve with no strikes. She did it once and thinks she should have got like a gazillion points!).
I won’t lose any sleep over my scores, but it might matter a lot to some people.
The main scoring thing to consider is whether you could keep track of many more strikes. If you can, then the best structure would be something along these lines: 500 - 100 for each of first 3 strikes, - 50 for next strike - 10 for each additional strike (minimum score 0), plus a 500 point bonus if you get it early ("under 5 strikes always, under 7 strikes if you watch an ad). Also must watch an ad to continue when you lose the bonus opportunity, and every 5 strikes after that.
That scoring means you only play each puzzle one time, you just keep playing it until you solve it.
I think that works for both regular games and random games. You could lower all the scores somewhat, or lower the bonus.
If that’s too tough (keeping track of more strikes after bonus gone, including repeat tries at the same puzzle), at least raise the bonus so that anyone collecting the bonus gets more than anyone not collecting the bonus. Then you still have the problem that someone solving a puzzle early in game 3 scores more than someone solving late in game 2, but only the most score-obsesses would mess up twice to get a better score, and they still have to watch an extra ad to get there.
I’ve never played a random game, but as I recall the bonus doesn’t apply there. You might want to incorporate the bonus into the random game. Or just accept that people will have an incentive to fail the first try to get a higher score in a second try. Or (though this might not be popular), say that random games get a maximum of 7 strikes [perhaps watching an ad after 5], after which you show them the solution. If they want to keep playing, they watch an ad and get a new random game.
I updated the scoring system with a few other things that some friends had pointed out. Now you get 75 points per word solved (ie 225) and lose 30 points of those for each strike. 200 points for solving the daily puzzle on the first shot and 300 points for solving a puzzle on the first try with no strikes. Apple approved surprisingly quick and it should be out there by morning. Make sure to update the app before you play if you care about the scoring.
305 points for 4 strikes
Me too. I actually didn’t think I was going to get it as I got 3 strikes right away.
335 today
I played this morning and I can’t remember whether I did it in 3 or 4 strikes. I definitely got it on the first try. I played some random puzzles too so I can’t check the score.
305 points. Think it was a 50-50 guess on the last letter, for 335 or 305
395 today. Did come down to a 50/50 for me too on the last letter and went the right way.
725 today, no misses, guessed on 2 letters to finish words where I thought I might have other options.
