Women's Soccer

When the men boycott their qualifiers, that will be the turning point.

A big chunk of coaches has now resigned (womens)

Rubiales has also been suspended by FIFA.

I looked into what his pay was and its €250,000/year + expenses (very high for Spain).

So basically, the guy wants to continue on with his cushy pay and is trying to copy the right-wing nutters with never admitting fault.

Good luck to him. When this is all over he will likely be gone and unhireable.

This just completely befuddles me…

Not surprising. A parent’s love can be blind.

His mom is from a small town in Granada (Andalucia)

Religious & Conservative area. This type of thinking is one of the drivers of why Spain has such a patriarchy (back in the day the women basically deferred to men).

Given her age (80+), there is probably some cognitive issues as well.

I assume that Rubiales (the son) subsidises their lifestyles to a certain extent (both mother and father retired in Motril). The father (now retired) was in politics and got caught up in a few corruption scandals (Andalucia is terrible for corruption). The mother was a hairdresser (now retired).

The whole thing has become like a soap opera now.

A bit like Italy where the son can do no wrong.

Maybe he should resign so he can go look after his mother.

That is what a good son would do…

Can’t call it a “witch hunt” if the witch has been found.

The situation has now veered into the absurd.

The Spanish Federation (who is backing Rubiales) has requested UEFA suspend Spanish teams from competitions. That would mean no Champions League for RM or Barcelona, and Europa League for other teams.

UEFA of course said no.

These people are completely delusional. Corporate sponsors will come after them now with a vengeance.

At this point, we need a clean sweep of these people. They are clearly totally unprofessional.

Why should so many pay the price to save one guy who is so obviously wrong?

There is something wrong with the Spanish football leadership. They are tone-deaf and just don’t seem to have perspective. A few months back the la Liga president tweeted something to the effect that Vinicius Jr was too sensitive after experiencing racist comments from a supporter. The Brazilian president and the minister of foreign affairs eventually got involved.

He has come out against Rubiales though. Maybe they’ll take each other down -

The people in those positions tend to support the far right (Tebas). He is a known Vox supporter.

Rubiales (father) was a politician from the Socialists (PSOE) Rubiales (son) was a player in La Liga who then decided to move into the Spanish Football Federation.

Tebas is well known for his racist views. They are tolerated in Spain because along the coasts there is heavy immigration (from Africa mostly), and there is now a critical mass of people there that are anti-immigratiom because their standard of living has not improved much in the last few decades.

Its the same story you see in Texas really. Conservative, right-wing, and very anti-immigrant.

Most of these folks are basically grifters. Being paid a hefty sum of public money to do little. They also give jobs to each other, their friends, kids etc. There is a significant amount of cronyism and nepotism in Spain in the public sphere.

When the public sector pays better than the private sector, and you are basically impossible to fire, it tends to grow to the point it creates economic inefficiencies in the aggregate sense.

None of this is “fixable”. Its cultural, and until they all shuffle off the mortal coil, they will continue doing this.

Somewhat illustrating this point, I thought this long twitter thread on Rubiales and RFEF was interesting

Not even sure it stops after they die, as the nepotism/cronyism is passed to the next generation. You mentioned Rubiales and the connection to his father with political influence. Another current example: Jorge and Angel Vilda. As long as a good old boy enrichment scheme is permitted, it seems change is unlikely.

Jorge Vilda has been fired.

They are starting to clean house as it has made the entire country look awful on an international level

Spain W issues ain’t over.

Maybe Need Men players to “save the day.”

I thought they were already striking to get the president to resign. Maybe it’s a concurrent strike.

The player kissed has filed a police report:
