Women's Basketball Thread

She’s a bit of an enforcer when the other team is taking cheap shots on Clark. I watched the whole exchange on this one and thought it was pretty funny. Bonner getting livid and trying to push people while Cunningham just sitting there pointing at her. She has some Shorts on youtube that are hilarious, so it’s more than just the pointing

Cunningham in the news again. The WNBA is nasty.

Yup, the WNBA is a dumpster fire right now.

As long as they don’t have a government-sanctioned monopoly like baseball does, what if the bullied cash cows just start their own league?

Well, the media coverage has become nasty. They need to remind themselves how little they care about this sport.

The problem is that the NBA owns most of the biggest arenas, and the TV money is sparse. And I think a root portion of the problem is that some players have issues with the fact that the GOAT of women’s basketball is an active player, but a different player gets all the media attention.

Especially when that different player happens to also be on track for goat status while not fitting the traditional mold.

Are you referring to the bench player?

Is that the one that keeps getting incidentally targeted on purpose and thus frequently injured?

No idea who that is.

To be fair: I don’t actually follow the WNBA (or the NBA) so ultimately I don’t care that much. I just love that everyone hates Clark just because she exists.

Although Jaspess hates Clark because she comes off as smug and arrogant (also fair, and probably accurate).

Bueckers is arguably the best young player in the league, is white, and isn’t being targeted. People don’t hate Clark because she exists, some people hate her and even more so her fans because she gets more media attention than Miles, Bueckers, and Wilson combined. Or Kayla McBride just set the WNBA record for 3s in a game, and didn’t get any of the attention that Clark gets for her shooting.

So in terms of demeanor, is Clark a bit of a diva? (Like, does she live for all the media attention, or does it just happen?)

I think she largely handles herself well. She flops a bunch, but also gets fouled a ton without things being called.

A portion of her fan base suck and probably root for the Eagles in the off season.

That’s a good point too. It’s really fan bases that tend to be the worst and ruin everything (cf. Taylor Swift and Star Wars).

I think she’s targeted more for being straight than white. Plenty of white girls in the league.

And yes, she gets way more media attention, but that all started way back at Iowa.

IFYP; not that I’ve seen her look for opportunities to push that line; but when asked about those things, she’s very straight forward about her position.

ISWYDT!

A’ja Wilson is in a relationship with a man and is respected by all peers, and the majority of the WNBA is straight. Certainly a much higher percentage are queer than the general population, but it is still less than 50%.

Not sure if Cunningham understands for whom the league commissioner works:

Spoiler: it’s the OWNERS, not the players.
