I think it’s a way to prioritize people who care a lot. Which seems completely reasonable.
Fwiw, i haven’t heard anything about anyone volunteering in my state. I think it’s all employees. But it seems like a decent idea.

Yeah, and in this one case, I’m pretty sure she’s wrong.
But it was an interesting perspective, imo.
I don’t see how the stigma of being obese would lead to more deaths from covid. either you die or you don’t.
Because a lot of fat people dread going to see a doctor and will put it off longer than is safe when they are sick, leading to situations where they get sicker than they had to be.
I don’t know that I buy into that for COVID, because I don’t know that seeking treatment early for this disease does a whole lot, but it’s true for many fat people in general. I will often put off going to the doctor when I’m sick especially when I know my doctor will just give me another lecture about my weight and attribute my problems to that. My doctor is kind of terrible. But I don’t think he’s unique, either.
yeah, I don’t know if I buy it as a major reason. I put off going to the doctor a lot too for a variety of reasons. Also for the reason you gave it likely isn’t true.
I’ve already gotten my first dose, despite the lack of a badge indicating it, but I looked into volunteering the other day after I’d already had mine scheduled. They’re only accepting medical staff, dental staff, and vet staff, from what I can tell. I am certified in CPR and first aid (recertified as of today, actually) and while I couldn’t jab someone with a needle, I could help with lines, assisting people in the waiting area, answering questions, stuff anyone could do. Doesn’t seem like my state is interested. Too bad, I was willing to give up a few days to help out.
I’m confused by all these volunteers. In NYC, people get paid big money to administer vaccines. Are there volunteers too? I know that the military is there helping out, but they also obviously get paid.
A lot of our sites are run by pharmacies, like CVS or grocery stores, so they’re being staffed by the actual employees. But we also have some mass vaccination sites, too. My husband went to one of those.
I saw some national guard folks there, keeping the line socially distant. There were also folks who were helping direct the flow of traffic, helping with parking. I imagine they were volunteers. I don’t know why you’d need any medical training to do that. Sign me up! But no, my help is no good here. ![]()
The people directing foot traffic, etc., where i went were all employees. I don’t think they are looking for volunteers. It’s easier to set up procedures and have the same employees implement them every day than it is to organize and train a new batch of volunteers every week. I’m surprised so many places are using volunteers. It’s not as if there’s some enormous extra effort involved.
I don’t think that’s it. Lots of people put off seeing the doctor. I think it’s because doctors often dismiss the symptoms of obese people, chalking them up to obesity rather than addressing them. That’s a real problem in a lot of ways, but I really don’t think it’s responsible for the impact of obesity on covid. I suspect that has to do with obesity tending to promote inflammation in general.
The thing is tho.. The pandemic has taken away from me everything that I love to do. Concerts, sporting events, taking my son to the zoo, aquarium, the big wheel. I’ll do anything to end this pandemic, except, I will not lie.
I think we’ll have enough vaccine for everyone who wants it in another month or two. Without having to scramble to find an appointment.
yeah…at my vax site there were a whole lotta people doing things that don’t need to be done by any sort of medical professional.
For sure. I’ve been practicing. I know the right websites to go to get an appointment When it’s my turn, I’ll be ready.
Well with the Pfizer and Moderna they can’t save it for another day: once it’s thawed, it must be used within several hours.
Johnson & Johnson is stored above freezing, but only slightly. I think they still bring it up to room temperature before putting it in your arm. And I’m guessing once they let it warm, it must be used.
All three come in multi-dose vials. And once you break the seal and use one dose in a multi-dose vial, you have to use or discard the rest within a matter of hours.
Okay… trying to see if I can get an appointment…
…and no availability anywhere near me. Well, at least it didn’t take me long to check.
when I was trying to book appts, available slots disappear in a few mins… =/
Still feeling good this morning
.
The nurse mentioned to me that people who’ve had COVID before will experience more side effects on the first dose (I didn’t know this, but upon Googling, it makes sense). I’m taking my non-reaction to mean that I probably didn’t have some asymptotic case that I unknowingly spread around. It feels good not killing anybody.
