Despite my previous objection this is true. Newer planes have an auto-land feature which I’m told is pretty cool.
That said, it won’t follow the verbal commands of Air Traffic Control. I don’t know if it will, say, fly around an approaching airplane that the radar detects. It will certainly manage turns though. Like if you’re flying from, say, Miami to Cancun, you can program the autopilot to make turns in order to avoid flying over Cuban air space (which is a whole Thing).
Anyway, it would be an interesting history.
A quick Google tells me that the first autopilots just made the plane fly straight and level. Which itself was a big relief to pilots. I don’t think the name is all that confusing. Mostly people just like to do dumb things with their cars.
I do think Musk generally oversold the product though, including the bs video.

Somewhat surprised he hasn’t banned that account yet, as his usual approach to enhancing free speech is to remove the dissenters.
