Why doesn't the United States just break up?

In a state government forward allocation of power how do you address large multistate, multinational corporations? A quick and dirty comparison shows that there are about 50 corporations larger than the smallest 10 states by GDP.

Remind them that after 9/11, where about 99.99% of Americans didn’t die, we decided to go to war for 20 years and spend a couple trillion $s.

I actually already did that! I think it was in the argument with the dude who eventually deleted his post.

well, more like I reminded him that we have the same number of people dying from COVID every day now as died on 9/11, but people STILL mourn the 9/11 deaths with the whole ā€œnever forget!ā€ nonsense, whereas those same people say it’s no big deal with covid since most people live.

I mean, I don’t think we should stop that.. doesn’t mean we can’t also take pause with the COVID deaths.

In terms of motivation I think a bunch of working age people dying in a fiery explosion just has a much stronger motivating effect than a virus we can’t (easily) see that very disproportionately affects those in nursing homes.

I already forgot why we went to war after 9/11. Granted, I was a kid when it happened.

i just don’t like the hypocrisy. nursing home deaths matter too. it’s also, not just nursing home deaths. some younger people did die from COVID too. with us having the equivalent of 9/11 deaths every day now, i’m sure at least as many younger people died from COVID as died on 9/11.

nobody close to me has died from COVID thankfully, and hopefully never will, but it would piss me off even more seeing those same people who downgrade COVID deaths as no big deal are all ā€œNEVER FORGET!!! :us:ā€ on 9/11.

I know people who died of COVID. Don’t know anyone that died on 9/11 though.

A chick I went to school with died on 9/11. I grew up on Staten Island which was disproportionally hit by 9/11 of the boroughs. staten islanders are the worst in regard to ā€œNEVER FORGET!ā€ for 9/11 and disregarding COVID deaths. they are also hard hit by COVID, which makes it all the weirder. also, strongly republican trumpkins there.

I did see a youtube video of a family that lived in a high rise that had a super clear view of the towers. They filmed the whole thing. It was more sensational than anything I’ve seen on the news. Probably because it’s a homemade video, and the woman was crying like a real person.

Arguably we went to 2 wars. Afghanistan was to flush out Al Qaeda who is the group that most directly attacked us. Iraq is a slightly complicated buy one get one free deal.

I’m not sure to be honest on the comparison. Would have to check with @meep on the specifics. I do think there’s an element that we should focus on quality years of life lost. Like a 20 year old dying on 9/11 is worse than a 90 year old dying of COVID so some of the early comparisons seemed a bit false when we were talking about cumulative deaths. Less so now deaths have gotten so high.

Well if you were a kid that makes sense, I didn’t personally know anyone else either. My parents knew many who died there, and there are actuarial employers who lost employees there. If my life was shifted back 20ish years it could very easily have been me.

Yeah, and the sounds of the thumping in the background from people jumping to avoid dying in the flames…

yeah, Aon was in the WTC, but it was the 2nd building hit. I know an actuary chick from Aon who ran down a whole lot of stairs to not die.

she said most of her coworkers would be late to work though, so most of them weren’t even there yet. she was bitter about begin on time and the rest were late to work, so their lives were not at risk at all.

Haha punished for being punctual.

What most gets me are the missing person fliers.

thing about 9/11 though is that both NYC were hardest hit by 9/11 AND COVID. in doing the math, we lost 0.3% of the entire population of NYC from COVID. that’s huge! so, why are these idiots not taking COVID seriously from staten island? 0.3% of your entire city is dead from this virus who were alive at the beginning of 2020. you can’t say the same about 9/11.

Because it’s harder to shoot COVID?

yeah, those were all over the place here. 9/11 was a few months after i had moved to manhattan :frowning:

This thread is ridiculous and lacks an understanding of the United States. It reeks of elitism.

jesus, that’s crazy to imagine. my legs would probably fail

:grimacing: at least it was down, not up, like those firefighters had to do. she was also a runner, so it probably wasn’t too horrendous for her, outside of the running for her life part.

I’m not sure I follow. Please, expand on this point.
