Who will be the Democratic nominee for POTUS in 2024?

Mostly agreed, Newsom would quickly wither on a national scale.

I like Sanders but it’s just too late in his career.

Warren would have a chance IMO but we saw how quickly she was shut down with the Native American thing. Bad look for her, the racism as a result was also bad but either way it sunk her.

AOC is a great politician but I don’t think there’s a national willingness to elect a female POC at this time, especially a younger one. Republicans will have a field day with “why should we listen to a bartender”-style disingenuous articles. They’d probably pull up some irrelevant college drama like the time there was a music video in which she danced, and call it un-Presidential.

Harris will be labeled as an angry Black person. Sorry, I do not like that but similar to Buttigieg it’s just a non-starter for ~30% of the country. Obama had similar hurdles and he wasn’t even a woman, which carries its own stigma.

I hear what you’re saying, but I think you’re also overlooking a piece of the equation.

In 2008, there was certainly a segment of the population who would not vote for Obama because of his skin color. There was also a segment of the population who did vote for him just because of his skin color. I think a segment of society wanted to other parts of society that skin color didn’t matter and they were more than happy to make that the over-riding factor in casting their ballot for POTUS.

I think Mayor Pete might find a similar result if he runs for POTUS.

However, the LGBTQ population in the US is much lower than the Black population. I’d happily vote for Buttigieg, but I have little faith in his electability. Modern-day America has become more tolerant of gay people but too many people still privately think that it’s “weird” or “wrong but shouldn’t be illegal.”

I would love to be mistaken.

I think Pete would have a good chance, because the nation has been gradually getting over their fear of teh gays.

It’s easy to forget that hearts change even when you’re not paying any attention to them.

OTOH, an election has a lot to do with demographics.
Winning the gays and losing the olds would be a no-go.

Biden is the most likely, but I don’t think it will be Biden. It’s just a crowded field still.

I don’t think that’s AOC’s problem.

Harris is a female POC. Condoleezza Rice was repeatedly asked to run and depending on the year and Democratic nominee, I think would have had a real shot.

AOC is reviled by too many, and she’s way too far left. Her Green New Deal is too radical to get votes from the centrists who ultimately decide elections.

Obama has 100x the charisma of Harris, which matters a lot in politics.

FYP.

We aren’t into communism in the US regardless of what people in the NE think. Bernie/Warren/AOC ain’t happening. They will all get slaughtered in a national election.

As someone who lives in flyover country I think Pete would have the easiest time overcoming objections of anyone on the list.

This. AOC has been the centerfold of Republican Hate Porn machine for years now. Another socialist, taking Bernies place, might have a slim chance, if young people ever voted, and if the Electoral College didn’t bias right a few %.

Sanders/AOC/Warren don’t have a chance because the US just isn’t that socialist a country, despite what very liberal pockets, reddit and late night comedy would lead you to believe.

Look how the progressives got trounced in the last primary.

Sheesh can you guys stop equating anything other than unrestrained capitalism as communist or socialist? It’s a stretch to call any of these people anything but slightly left of center if you compare them to the rest of the world.

The rest of the world won’t be getting a vote…

The average American thinks they are practically communists. They are wrong, but they are going to vote based on their belief, not reality.

AOC is slightly socialist and categorically belongs to a socialist organization according to their name. That’s as far as I’ll go.

It’s still a quite tame version of socialism - more or less she supports increased minimum wage, clean energy, healthcare for all, and accountability for corporations and wealthy individuals regarding business practices and taxation.

The right turned that into, “You can’t board a plane or eat a hamburger.”

Yes. My point is that repeating these nonsense talking points perpetuates the confusion.

Looking back, I think perhaps Obama was just a fucking amazing individual.

It’s easy to remember his hopey-dreamy speeches, but look at his interviews, and just read the transcripts, and compare them to any other politician in the last 20 years. His typical, everyday, off-the-cuff response to almost any question is comparable to the best GoActuary.com post.

Harris is fine, and will probably get my vote, but she’s not brilliant.

AOC proposed a guaranteed jobs program in the GND, did she not? That’s pretty far left, even for a European.

The Green New Deal has a job guarantee, yes. I can’t say for certain whether that was AOC’s brainchild… there were multiple sponsors of GND. And yes, that’s pretty socialist by European standards.

My understanding of the “Jobs Guarantee” is a federal transitional program to train workers for new industries, not an eternal handout of do-nothing jobs paid by the taxpayers.

It feels like a more targeted version of the Civilian Conservation Corps, which I understand was generally viewed as a success and was quite popular at the time.

What are you basing that on?

The FAQ & fact sheet simply says “Guarantee a job with family-sustaining wages” with no further qualifiers.

I’ve seen pundits claim it is transitional but I haven’t seen anything to back that up (which by no means proves they are wrong… just that I haven’t seen it.)
