We went there years ago on your recommendation, it’s great for the kiddos.
Great for the adults.

Trying to persuade my wife to go to Costa Rica for a week in mid-January. Will probably fly into Liberia to avoid a US airport connection.
I am not a “go to a beach for a week” guy and want to see different parts of the country while we are there: primarily places to see flora and fauna. Any recommendations as the guidebooks show too many options!
Liberia seems to be a bit out of the way…
US airlines seem to fly into San Jose, Canadian ones into Liberia. My guidebook said nothing much to see in San Jose and flying into Liberia avoids the hassle of US Customs and Immigration in an American connecting airport. International transit lounges don’t seem to exist anymore.
TIL: Liberia is a city on C.R.
Sorry. Hadn’t crossed my mind that folks would confuse the CR one with the country!
You have a lot of options in terms of spots to explore: Monteverde Cloud Forest, Manuel Antonio, Arenal Volcano, Tortuguero…
I’ve been there twice and enjoyed it. Would go back.
The last time I went we did a package with a company that has lodges in both Monteverde and Tortuguero. They did a good job. Böëna Lodges, Costa Rica | Alluring. Authentic. Exclusive. We were there when the sea turtles were laying eggs at Tortuguero, which we saw up close. Sea turtle hatch time is also a big event there.
When we went, there were no roads to Tortuguero. We had 2 options: boat or very small plane. We did boat in, plane out. I imagine that is still the case, but have not researched.
Ha! I used to go to Lebanon to buy wine. In New Hampshire, that is. Interestingly, they did have a famous Lebanese wine I like once, Chateau Musar, but it was a bit out of my price range.
Thanks. Lots of good stuff here to look into further.
Looking to plan out our summer soon. My younger son will be attending a Tourette’s camp near Atlanta in June, so might try to tack a beach vacation onto the tail end of that.
Or maybe Montreal, since everyone will have their passports by then.
Or maybe nothing at all. We did a beach trip last year that was a very bad experience and maybe we need a year off from vacations.
We will see how the bonus in March comes out.
Budapest/Vienna/Prague/Berlin as I made clear by soliciting advice in a recent thread => end of April 2025.
Maybe take my mom for a car ride down to the Ozarks in September 2025
And bridge tournaments:
2024
6 days in Las Vegas after Thanksgiving
2025
Twin Cities May
Maybe 6 days in Philadelphia July
Omaha August
You could hit either the Gulf or Atlantic beaches in a 4-6 hour drive from Atlanta. Hit me up if you want some ideas.
Just made my final payment for my Galapagos trip in January
I’m pretty expert on Maui if that’s of interest.
You’d have to know the one in CR existed to get them mixed up. I only knew of the country until this morning.
CR is clearly Cedar Rapids.
My son and I are trying to think of somewhere to go for our 2025 spring break in late March. We did NYC last year, Boston the year before. He’ll be 21, but I don’t think he’d want to go to Vegas with me. I thought about Toronto or Montreal. He mentioned a train ride down the west coast, so maybe I should look into San Francisco.
Just assumed Americans would be familiar with the main cities in Central America because of their relative proximity to the US. CR is a lot closer to the US than to Canada!
Regarding Americans and geography: TikTok - Make Your Day
It is not a matter of which countries are close to us. Most of us are not good at either Canadian or Mexican geography. Our focus is on the US. The rest of the world doesn’t matter much.
