What's your favourite type of fish, and why is it perch?

Inspired by reddit.

Also, walleye for part marks.

Turbot is good.

Branzino - whole
Salmon, with crispy skin
Trout

Salmon and halibut

Mostly eat salmon and cod

Wild trout; especially brook trout and brown trout from the high country.

Wild-caught salmon is a very close second . . . and far more readily available than my favorite.

Eel (yes, itā€™s a fish). And add another vote for trout. Crappie is quite good. If weā€™re doing sushi, yellowtail and red snapper are on my list.

Itā€™s been so long since I had perch that I canā€™t recall eating it. When I was growing up we ate a lot of it because my dad fished at a lake that had a lot of perch.

Have you tried Grouper?

I canā€™t say that I have. Iā€™m heading to Maui on Saturday and Google tells me they have grouper there, so Iā€™ll keep an eye out.

Barramundi, trevally and red snapper.

Only when I am in FL, but I like Grouper

Coincidentally, we just had perch down in Brazil for our wedding anniversary dinner.

Itā€™s not a type of fish that I normally eat though.

Catfish (iykwim)
Cod and Haddock for me

I think around the world thereā€™s a bunch of different fish that are called perch - some related, some not so much.
My mother bought some perch for a fish fry last year and it turns out that it was ā€˜ocean perchā€™ whatever that is. It was nasty. We ended up slicing up some bologna, frying it in the deep fryer, and eating that instead.

where did she buy it? Was it actually fresh?

Iā€™m pretty sure ocean perch was my momā€™s standard when I was growing up. It was sold in 1# frozen rectangular blocks (whole filets, but with all them just squeezed into a rectangle). Iā€™m sure it was the cheapest available fish at the grocery store. It was pretty mild as fish go and a reasonable texture. Pretty good for the price at the time imo.

I like the way you spelt ā€œfavouriteā€.

ā€œSpelled favorite wrongā€¦ā€

Had some salmon baked wonderfully by my wife last Saturday. Bought at the local fancy store, wild-caught, though filled with bones. Cuz family over.

Try some Ahi Poke. Yes, fresh uncooked fish.

We love poke! We will be eating poke for sure, thereā€™s a seafood restaurant we like in Kihei, and normally we find some manner of fresh seafood at the grocery store and do a cookout on the beach (grills are provided!). Iā€™m going to eat my weight in seafood over the next couple of weeks.

This is what I remember. I grew up in a middleclass suburb in the Midwest to Catholic parents that practiced fish on Fridays year round. The rectangular blocks of frozen fish were the regular fair.

Now, living in the Midwestern suburb and getting most of my fish from the local supermarket we get the pink fish, the white fish or catfish. The pink fish is what they call salmon. The white fish is either cod or tilapia. I like the catfish if I want a fillet that will hold itā€™s shape.

Iā€™ve had perch, I prefer walleye. I donā€™t get either often enough to really compare the two fairly.

In rural south eastern ontario, so imma go with no.
Yellow.perch there is fresh since its fished right there.

The rare time i buy perch or walleye (i generally catch it myself) we go to the dock on lake erie and buy it pretty much right off the boat.

My difficulty with perch is that everytime i get some ahead in the freezer someone wants a fish fry. Weā€™ve had two fish fries in the last month or so, both with about 8 people,so im tapped out again. And i.was supposed to do another one in about three weeks but i think im getting out of the fish on that one. Ill still have to do fries though.
