I love nectarines and watermelon
Ooh, tough call. Fresh peaches are so good, and strawberries at their peak are great too. Watermelon hits the spot when ripe and served cold. The difference between the average version of these fruits and their best is pretty huge.
A good watermelon, or maybe bing cherries.
Fruit: cherries, nectarines, garden tomatoes
Veggies: corn on the cob, snap pea
Watermelon is gross.
Your wrong.
Deep Eddy lime is the bomb. I’m not going to taint it with watermelon.
Strawberries, peaches, nectarines.
I’m not a fan of watermelon, although I think I ate quite a bit of it as a kid. I think I got turned off by fake watermelon flavor and haven’t gotten past it yet.
I’m also not a big fan of what most people seem to consider “a good tomato”. I’m happy with the more tasteless, less bitter Romas.
Watermelon IS gross and don’t feel ashamed for speaking your truth.
I hate hate triple hate bitter foods, but I love tomatoes. I wouldn’t call any of them bitter unless you’re also getting bits of the stem, maybe. They’re sweet or acidic or tangy.
Peaches, Plums
Good large tomatoes seem impossible to find these days outside about a week or two in late July.
These however are awesome:
A regular at Costco ($5-6 for 2lb), but you can occasionally find them elsewhere.
I slice up about 4 of them as a side with lunch when I wfh.
Tomatoes vary by region. The fresh tomatoes that you can easily get in California are vastly better than what is sold in supermarkets on the East Coast.
And watermelon isn’t gross, it is just a virtually flavorless waste of space.
I don’t understand the watermelon hate. Bad watermelon, or even meh watermelon you get already cut up at the store in January might fit the accusation. But a prime, ripe, watermelon has good structure (less than a crunchy apple but more satisfying than a pear and less confusing than the lumpy/watery tomato) and the right amount of sweetness. It is a mild taste, never bold, but lots of juice. The flavor nuance is diametrically opposed from a watermelon Jolly Rancher.
Slices are great for a pool side snack or back yard barbeque. I generally use no salt, but a watermelon feta salad can also be a treat.
I suppose if we all have a picnic, more for me and breadie. I do wish there were a better way to id the best watermelon at the store.
watermelon, you can eat, drink and wash your face, all at the same time
try adding tomato as well
100%. I think watermelons and tomatoes can be really good, but many are just bland with texture that’s not right. But a good watermelon is amazing.
It’s almost impossible much of the year to find a good tomato. I wind up taking them off a burger or sandwich if I’m dining out most of the time. But a good tomato? I’ll eat slices with a little S&P.
That too.
