Spent the weekend watching soccer, watching parents get all worked up about soccer.
Then bought that wine fridge, which fit in my car (sideways… there’s a joke somewhere in there), sorta. The hatch shut, but my hatch’s window hatch (additional) wouldn’t shut. Had to leave that open, giving a little CO inhalation. Hate that.
All the “new” cars I want are smaller than the one I have, leaving me asking friends to help with large items like that.
Looking at the new electric VW van, though. That might be unusual enough for me to buy. (It is one of the requirements not to have a plain-wrap vehicle. (Is that an old phrase: “plain wrap”?))
Dying, of course a little inside as I say goodbye to a stick shift.
(Fun thing: The wine fridge fit in only with my seat all the way up. Like driving a clown car.)
200-mile range will get me to wine country (the one I go to), but not back.
Only issue I have is the VW touchscreen, which requires looking away from the road while adjusting, say, AC or the radio. Knobs, please!
The VW van looks super interesting, might try to get one for my wife in a few years. Are there any DC fast chargers to and from wine country? If not, decent chance they will add one by the time you might buy.
Agree 100% on knobs, a lot of people hate having everything on a screen. I penalized the VW Golf R pretty heavily for this reason.
Wondering how the screen is somehow “better” than knobs for everyday use.
The only answer I have is that when it breaks, VW makes a shit-ton of money replacing it.
I mean, is it less expensive to build? Does it last longer than a bunch of knobs? Does it cost less to replace than one independent knob? Does it cost less to run than knobs (on an EV, that electricity comes from somewhere, essentially lowering range)?
Fun fact which I have probably shared already: my son’s Prius (hand-me-down from bro-in-law) has a screen that runs the ventilation system and audio. Sometimes it works. When it doesn’t, the AC will run when it’s not needed, or the heat will run when it’s not needed. Thinking of replacing it, charging him for the part. Who knows what the real problem is, besides being 18 years old.
Wait, we had this discussion before. I don’t think it’s manufacturers being nefarious, honestly. My best guess is along these lines:
We are going to put in a big touch screen because people do like them for some things. Since the screen is going in there, it is cheaper to control everything via a screen vs also adding buttons and switches, so let’s do that to save $50/car or whatever.
I doubt it’s material to range for EVs. Propulsion is by far the largest power usage. HVAC can be quite high if it’s really cold or really hot - up to around 20% or so of total energy use if you’re around 0° from what I’m hearing. Everything else - headlights/taillights, audio, ambient lights, rolling windows up and down etc - is something like 3% or so iirc.
They are still not thinking about driving safety. So, people will need new cars more frequently, cuz crash.
I’d rather there be an app for my phone that I could control these aspects by voice.
“Hey, Buzz (my nickname for my VW ID Buzz, if I get one), turn on A/C left side to 72 degrees.”
“Hey, Buzz, play Rare Earth’s Get Ready, the long version.”
I liken it to three-point safety belts that are so uncomfortable (but cheap, for the mfr) that people would rather not wear them while driving. Mfr is not liable, because driver didn’t use belts, as they are required to by law.
I have avoided buying from the Major American Car Companies precisely for this reason. Japanese car companies that I have owned have all had comfortable seat belts.
Yes, not only is it annoying, but it’s also unsafe to click through menus whilst driving. And, per usual, regulators are lagging the tech, I think regulation could help a lot here. At least a lot of new cars alert you of collision risk and some/many will brake for you.
I’m not asking for the moon here, just hard controls for temp, fan speed, volume, and maybe heated seats and a few other audio controls. Let’s say seven buttons.
Bright Leaf Brew Fest this weekend (11/12). I’m serving my Rye Pale Ale and bringing bottles of my Tart Cherry Porter. Brew club members serving a Cider and Clone of the New Belgium 1554
Will be interested to hear the results of your weekend tasting. I try to avoid drinking beer and wine made by my friends but maybe this is higher quality.
