What did you do this weekend?

I’m grilling some chicken wings right now! Then I’ll make some oreida French fries and we’re gonna wash it down with some A&W root beer floats.

Gazebo or pergola? Thought about getting one or the other, or some retractable awning. Or just a big ole umbrella that I can shove inside most of the time. The gazebo kits (stuff from Costco) look like they are mostly wood, but with metal roofs, while the pergolas looks like they are all aluminum.

So if there is one to clearly avoid, I’d be interested in hearing that.

I believe it was a gazebo, given how the two look different. I don’t know, I just know his wife ordered it and it was a DIY project and it may have had all the elements of family bonding: throwing something, cursing, and drawing blood.

Cleaning the boat. Cleaning the bathrooms. Cleaning the garage. Out for dinner. And if I get all that done today, going fishing with some nerds tomorrow.

Every year, on the first weekend of June, there is a Festa Italia at our neighborhood park.
I call it it Festa Carbohydrate: pasta, pasta, pizza, cannoli…
(Un)Fortunately, it’s only a block from our house. Ah, the temptation!
I suppose I could walk off the carbs…walk there and eat, then walk back home…walk there again later, eat, then walk back home… it’s a two-day affair, so I should be able to get a lot of exercise.

Like a big pizza pie, that’s amore”…

I participated in the discussion…

Arrived Friday night at my boyhood home in Ontario for a weekend with my brother who still lives there. Staying in the same bedroom as I did when I was a kid.

Had a Cooke Cousin reunion at the farmhouse on Saturday with a dozen cousins. Oldest was 93 but she was in great shape and sharp as ever: hope I inherited the same genes as she did from our grandparents! Much reminiscing as all the cousins spent much time with our common grandparents in this farmhouse in their childhoods.

For Sunday lunch, bought some poutine and butter tarts from the woman who runs a food cart on the highway a few hundred yards from the farmhouse. Interesting woman: she lives in the adjacent 1875 former Wesleyan Methodist church that I went to as a kid. (All the rural schools and churches were closed in the 1960’s and kids subsequently went into town for education, secular and religious. The rural buildings were sold as affordable housing, typically under $1,000.)

Bicycled 35 minutes into town with my wife to visit my younger brother after poutine consumption and then helped host our niece and her new beau that evening at the farmhouse.

For Canada Day (today) we will primarily enjoy the sunshine of a beautiful rural Ontario day by hanging out on the farm. This evening we will take in some local Canada Day celebrations as the band of one of my old classmates is the headline act. He is an old rocker but his band, The Ploughboys, is primarily a C&W band as this is rural Ontario. I can only take that music in small doses!

Saw two good friends this weekend that I don’t get to see as often as I’d like. It was a good weekend.

I totally get this.

As I age I have made a point of reconnecting with old friends that I haven’t seen for decades. Am reuniting with my first year college roommate in Niagara on Wednesday and I reconnected last week with another university friend that I had not been in touch with since 1969. Every reunion may be the last one!
