Michael steals from his company because he thinks he can get away with it, steals his brother’s girlfriend, uses Buster’s love life as a pawn in his game of manipulation, has his brother in law break into Maggie’s house, creates an elaborate scheme to terrify his son to not use drugs rather than talk to him about it…just off the top of my head. He’s as flawed as the rest, only he believes himself to be morally superior, so he’s really worse.

I don’t think he really steals his brother’s girlfriend, she chooses him. And he steals from the company? He seemed to be the main driver to stop the fraud. And loads of people use terrifying schemes to try and parent their child’s behavior, that’s just human (not strictly good or bad).
Was his POS hotel in a super small town like we’re talking about here? I mean, who even stays there? POS hotels in cities can definitely make a profit.
I always wondered how motels make money, or function, for that matter.
Bates Motel, for instance. They have like one customer a day or something. And Norma had to clean and do all the sheets all by herself? What happens if there are 10 customers?
My hometown in Po’ Colorado had 3 motels. THREE. For most of the year, they would be at ~10% occupancy; more often than not, closer to 0%.
All of them were profitable enough during hunting season (100% occupancy during the 6 weeks or so) and were able to charge enough to not only cover fixed expenses for the entire year, but to also have a comfortable cushion to cover employee costs during the rest of the year where they try to be more competitive for folks wanting a lower-cost option for lodging than the nearby ski resort (~1 hour drive).
Key events (e.g., weddings with a considerable number of out-of-town guests) generally added to the profit margin.
Michael is by no means perfect, so a list of examples of his non-perfection wouldn’t be very convincing. But he seems to be someone in an impossible situation who tries to do his best* and sometimes screws up and sometimes does the wrong thing but mostly tries to do the right thing.
He’s not even close to the worst character on the show, which is surely the mother.
It was close to a college so he definitely got some low-income parents staying there. Graduation weekend was a guaranteed sellout, certainly, and he jacked up the rates that weekend.
I think technically you are not allowed to do this. So he had an astronomical rack rate and then had “specials” like 48 weeks a year (excluding move-in week, Mom’s weekend, Dad’s weekend, graduation) and charged the rack rate only on special occasions.
I guess we have different taste in TV. When the reboot came out like 2/3 of my female friends on Facebook were going nuts over it. So I decided to give the original series a shot.
It was OK right up to the point where the daughter dumped the perfect guy who worked in the grocery store and gave her a car and went out with the manipulative jerk who hid her bracelet instead. And from what I read… they made the jerk into something of a bad-boy-turns-good which I just found not believable in his case. I stopped watching at that point but read a bit about what happened after that and it sounded awful.
Rory should have ended up with Jess! Not the Jess from the first half of the show, the Jess he became in the second half and in the reboot. Dean was controlling and jealous.
Gilmore Girls is a good show, but not without its flaws, for sure. Emily Gilmore is a fantastic character, and Kirk makes the entire show great, in my opinion.
I don’t think Michael tries to do the right thing. I think he does the easy thing. If you look at the ways he treats his own son, it really highlights how he’s not a good person
He slept with his son’s teacher and then lied to his son and said it was GOB who did. He interrupts his son when his son is trying to tell him something important, constantly. He finds out he’s dating the same woman as his son, and still dates her! He’s constantly lying to his son and not hearing what he has to say. He even sent him to a school he doesn’t want to be at and then faced with the fact that George Michael thinks he’s a bad father, he threatens to poison the teacher.
I enjoy the show, but Michael is arguably the worst because he has a conscience, and chooses to ignore it when it’s convenient.
Finished The Flight Attendant and really like the last few episodes, a bit sluggish in getting started. Got through the first season of The Mandalorian. Like it a lot more than I expected to. Watched season 9 of Letterkenny. Nice see everyone back, but it felt a little forced. Still very much enjoyed. Season 2 of The Mandalorian is in progress.
Started The Expanse, about halfway through season 2. There’s a lot going on, and my spouse (who can generally place faces 10x better than me) keeps asking who people are, or when something is. I don’t know if they are falling asleep during it (actually, I do know, they have… a few times, but that’s their normal), but I think it would have been better to watch on my own, but they like space fiction, so now it’s going a little slower, and I am staying more focused so I can explain things
Finished season 2 of The Mandalorian. It was pretty good. I had heard about the twist at the end, so that kind of ruined the reveal. This season is a lot more one storyline as baby Yoda is moved from place to place. I prefer a more episodic story, but it worked and was nice to see characters return from previous episodes.
