Rereading Marmee by Sarah Miller, for a book club.
next genre Self Help and Spiritual, this is one i would skip, but realizing I have a lot of religious books, which is generally close enough.
Witness From The Pulpit
These are the sermons of Rabbi Harold Saperstein 1933 to 1980. He was both my wife’s and my rabbi growing up.
His son became Obama’s Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.
Finished “God Save Benedict Arnold.” Good read. He was so close to being a hero. He turned traitor when an injury took him out of the war, and George Washington refused to let him back in.
Just finished The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. It was just ok.
Started Caroline by Sarah Miller. It’s Little House on the Prairie from Caroline’s perspective. I really liked Marmee by the same author, so I’m guessing I will like this one as well.
Which one is Caroline? Her sisters were Mary and Carrie, right?
?
Caroline is the mother.
Carrie was the younger sister. In the books there was also Grace, but Grace was not on the tv show.
Oops I fact checked myself and Grace was in the tv show in later seasons. Her character was not developed. Honestly I don’t remember much about her in the books either.
just finished Twain’s Roughing It, which I didn’t realize ended in a trip to Hawaii, where he gets to try out surfing
Now onto Graham Greene’s Our Man in Havana
Yeah, I sort of vaguely recall there being a fourth daughter now that you mention it. A lot younger IIRC.
I’ve been listening to Margo’s Got Money Troubles and am debating bailing. Margo gets pregnant by her married JC prof and has the baby. This causes her prof to ghost her, causes her to drop out of school, causes her roommates to bail from their expensive shared apartment because of the baby’s crying and, at the same time, causes her to lose her job since she’s got no childcare, so she suddenly has a huge rent bill with no income. Then her ex-wrester heroin-addict dad-who’s-not-been-in-her-life-much-because-he’s-married-to-someone-other-than-Margo’s-mom moves in. He mentions that many wrestlers use OnlyFans to get money and she suddenly decides she can do the same to get the money she needs. This sounds like it is going downhill and going to be a big downer before, no doubt, some sort of positive ending.
However, I looked back at goodreads and they claim it is a “bold, laugh-out-loud funny, and heartwarming story”. Hmm. I’d not noticed anything funny at all. But maybe I"ll give it a little longer since I’m still waiting on a few other books to show up. And maybe if I know it is supposed to be laugh out loud funny, I’ll notice some humor.
Maybe the humor is to laugh at someone else’s misfortune? I don’t find that funny, generally speaking, but many people do.
White Like Me - Tim Wise
Audio books need a laugh track??
Finished Caroline today. I liked it as much as I liked Marmee. Just cool to get the mother’s perspective. Except when she talked about sex. I did not need to think about Pa and Ma having sex. It would be like reading my mother’s diary. No thank you.
Also reading The Inheritance Games by . The main character is a high school junior girl who wants to be an actuarial science major in college.
They had 5 children in an era that predates IVF, so…
Read this on an NPR article:
“I love America more than any other country in this world and exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”
So, thinking about picking up some Baldwin.
I am continuing my odyssey through the Dune novels and have pretty well finished God Emperor of Dune. Quite enjoying it.
The first three books after the original Dune novel are indeed different from the initial book. The extensive musings in the subsequent books are more what I would expect from Dostoevsky (whom I love) than from most sci-fi writers. There are extensive insights on religion, human nature and artificial intelligence.
I will not bother reading any of Frank Jr’s books as the consensus is they are disappointing. Frank Sr on the other hand has incredible insights and is always thought-provoking.
I just started Infinite Jest on audiobook, which mentioned reference numbers to footnotes, but no reading of the content of the footnotes. Would I be significantly missing out by not reading a print version?
