If you think the start of book 1 was slow, wait until you experience Rothfuss’ pace of moving the series forward! Sanderson will likely finish the 10-book Stormlight Archive before we get book 3 of the Kingkiller series.
Yeah the running joke in the community is whether Martin or Rothaus will publish the next book in the series first. jokes on us, they might both die before finishing.
Picked up a copy of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary while on vacation. Liked The Martian, so hoping it will be a fun ride.
It’s PKD being a bit ass-chapped over A Canticle for Leibowitz… and Zelazny being charitable and finishing it for Dick, because his health not being great.
it’s not a good book.
Not sure Sanderson will win that race. He has a lot of irons in the fire now. I have to say that I can’t believe the Kingkiller series had 2 lengthy books and there was no Kingkilling and then the series went dormant. Didn’t do enough research. At least Sanderson ends books at good places.
Sanderson does indeed have a lot of irons in the fire…and has a planned break between the first 5 books of Stormlight and the last 5…but he’ll still probably finish before both ASOIAF and Kingkiller! He is prodigious in his output…and such good quality!
In paperbook, The Stranger by up & coming author A. S. Troxler. Probably the best self published book I’ve read to date.
In audio, Secrets in Summer by Nancy Thayer. Pretty much a mindless beach read, but the protagonist is a librarian, so I’m sticking with her.
Randomly picked up a few Pulitzers. Currently on Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, which is a retelling of David Copperfield, set in 90s Appalachia.
Pretty good so far. Your typical.clever charismatic hero tossed from one shitty situation into the next.
My wife really enjoyed that one…
It took me 2 months to get through Swann’s Way. Very glad I stuck with it, but definitely felt like work a lot of the time. My friend’s mom sent me The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store which I’ll be reading next.
I loved The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. I also recommend his other book, “Deacon King Kong”, if you haven’t already read it.
I thought it was a very good book.
Will add that one to my list! Have only read The Good Lord Bird and The Color of Water. Enjoyed both of them.
Waiting for a few books on hold on Libby, so decided to try A Court of Thorns and Roses…feel like I’m reading Beauty and the Beast with different names! Hoping one of my other books comes off hold soon!
I finished Before the Coffee Gets Cold. It was really interesting. A certain seat at an old coffee shop allows people to travel in time. Few have interest in it because of the numerous rules: nothing you do in the past will affect the future, you can’t leave the seat, you can only see people who have visited the coffee shop, and you have to return to the present before your coffee gets cold or you turn into a ghost. The book covers several people who, for a variety of reason, still want to travel in time.
I thought the story was better than the writing (or the translation, perhaps - it was written in Japanese). And there were a couple annoying tear-jerker sections that felt manipulative to me. But the story was really good, I though. There are some sequels, but I don’t think I"ll read them.
I’d intended to listen to the Alice Munro collection next, but after Libby said it could delay my hold and I"d get it next, I did that and I find that there are now several people in front of me. I may just wait for it. I’ve been supposed to be studying for an AWS exam and I told my boss I’d take the test by … oh! … today, it turns out. That’s not gonna happen. But maybe I"ll take a few days to work on that.
Couldn’t do it…just not my cup of tea! A rare DNF for me…
Took out Artemis Fowl to replace A Court of Thorns and Roses…quick read, been meaning to check it out. I’ll probably re-read A Game of Thrones next to wash out the memory of ACoTaR.
next genre up, Romance
My Cousin Rachel, Daphne du Maurier
I don’t read a lot, but read that one recently after seeing the newest version movie.
I’ve only seen the original version
