Trump frequently complains about everything President Obama is doing wrong as the current President.
Projects universally run over budget and are never on time. That is not a government problem IMO.
US hospitals are pretty nice these days, most seem to have renovated their spaces and provide private rooms. It was really nice the times I have been able to experience it.
Had absolutely nothing to do with actual health care, and I am sure it increased the cost substantially. But free market with obscure costs that I dont care about after the first $x,xxx paid, so give me the best my insurance company can afford.
I have heard the horror stories about London hospitals and expecting mothers being treated in wards. Sounds terrible. But the health care was just fine, and they might send a bill to their US visitorâŚif they even had a way to create a bill.
Well the family member of mine that they killed wasnât able to pay his bill to the NHS hospital.
Personal experiences vary but my three night emergency stay in a London hospital ten years ago was first rate. The cost was also reasonable. Still glad though that my out of country medical insurance picked up 100% of hospital stay and related costs.
Yeah, my English family all hate the NHS⌠but it is cheap!
well that may include snowbirds covered by travel insurance, happens a lot.
Iâm assuming the 52,000 doesnât include Canadians who ended up needing medical care due to stuff that came up during trips without a medical purposeâŚ
Of the 52,000, it would be interesting to know what fraction were for plastic surgery, experimental treatments, and care for which Canada lacks expertise due to population size (e.g. rare diseases/disorders where there just isnât the patient population to support experts in Canada). It would also be interesting to see how many were for medical imaging. The other one is, was it 52,000 visits or 52,000 individuals? Would not be a surprise if the two were conflated.
I know there was a high profile case where the premier or former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador traveled to Florida(?) for bypass surgery. I think he was trying to get a leading expert to do his.
But millions of Americans travel for medical tourism every year.
I agree with this general attitude in every industry except health care, speaking as a health actuary. The failing of the market is demostrated by the astronomical prices. We spend like an extra $5k per capita on health care. Which is like enough to buy everybody a fucking porsche. And maybe that would be fine if we actually loved our wonderful system, but we donât.
Many years ago, Milton Friedman wrote a little piece on US health care. He was kind of shocked that the US had such an expensive system. He suggested some low level of goverment coverage for everyone. Of course his primary recommendation was to cut the tax break.
Youâre a detailed oriented analytical nerd, Iâm positive that some part of your brain is asking how much we actually spend on obesity and geriatric pregnancies even as you toss out these explanations.
Maybe itâs the rain, or maybe itâs a crap umbrella. You gotta do the numbers.
A US hospital killed my MIL due to inadequate basic care. You can get shit service at any price.
I will say the NICU experience that I had having kids was top notch. Brand new private rooms for the newborn to stay in, with plenty of room for mom, dad, grandparents, siblings. Couch in the back for mom to pump/breastfeed. Those are $5000 per patient per day revenue generating accommodations. Would have gone bankrupt in a few weeks without insurance.
American hospitals are designed to generate revenue, not treat patients. Every mom wanted to have a baby at that hospital, because it was the best and the nicest. This is big money since more babies means more possible NICU revenue. The hospital ran ads on local TV. Now this does also end up attracting good doctors, so the actual healthcare is probably pretty good, but thatâs not the part they advertise.
Millions? Sounds high.
huh:
Each year, millions of US residents travel to another country for medical care which is called medical tourism.
In 2010 the NHS had a 70% approval rating. It was given a tribute in the 2012 opening ceremony at the Olympics. Fourteen years of Conservative leadership and the program has a 23% approval rating. Government run health insurance only works if the government prioritizes it.
IFYP
This would absolutely be a problem in the US too. Medicare Gor All would need some really solid political footing (like medicare) or it would be assaulted endlessly by conservatives (like obamacare).
Help us, Moderators!!
Conservatives successfully breaking the parts of government they donât like isnât too surprising. Whatâs actually quite amazing is they achieved the same dismal result with the thing they have been fighting for for decades, the Supreme Court.
