UK General Election 2024

A week of campaigning in the UK for the 4th July General Election (perhaps a hint where Sunak would rather be).

Tories have angered my youngest with their National Service policy, my eldest will be too old to be affected.

“Sleepy Keir” is the new gambit, generally being reacted to with sighs.

Did you have a good laugh on the national service thing?

He really must be doubling down on the over 75 vote.

Went down like a lead balloon with just about everybody else. What a muppet.

And now…the defections start.

The young conservatives president for Birmingham has resigned over this and joined the LibDems :joy:

I will be canvassing down here in Surrey for the anti-Tory vote.

I want to see if we can throttle them to below 100 seats at the GE.

Has to be an era-defining political wipeout for them to get the message.

When we lived in the UK I voted for the Lib Dems but they seem to have been in the political wilderness since their ill-fated deal with the Tories a few years ago. Any chance of a resurrection for them after the inevitable July 4 Labour landslide?

Pulling from the Trump playbook?

Stop insulting Muppets!!

This is a major US export unfortunately.

The current Canadian Conservative leader also uses some Trump tactics such as trying to undermine the veracity of the mainstream media, being uncivil towards opponents and playing the victim.

They look to be winning a few seats from the Tories in what used to be called the blue heartlands.

Surrey
Berkshire
Hertfordshire
Oxfordshire

Etc. Etc.

Its mostly due to local issues (sewage) and potholes. Local folks can literally see the damage every day so they are pretty angry. They won’t vote for Labour, but they will switch to the LDs as long as their candidate is reasonable.

The anti-Tory vote this time around is pretty sizeable.

Yes but without really understanding it. Trump wouldn’t call Starmer Sleepy Keir because it is not a well fitting insult.

Looks like nothing they throw at their core vote is making one shred of difference. People are very angry, and definitely not listening to them any longer.

Even the Telegraph is starting to sound the alarm. They are scared this is going to be an electoral wipeout worse than 1997.

66 projected seats now. Down from 365 at the 2019 GE.

Sunak asked why does he hate young people. He doesn’t really, he just cares what old people think.

I do feel sort of bad for him.

Its pretty clear he is not good at politics. He just can’t relate to people outside of his own (very small) orbit.

He should have been intelligent enough to realise his own shortcomings, but I assume that probably gets lost in the noise of his advisors telling him what he wants to hear.

Well, I do hope he learns a lesson from his upcoming electoral failure.

I can’t imagine that “Betting Against Britain” in his pre-politics financial career is going to be much of a factor in Sunak’s campaign? Labour just attacking the Tories’ record should suffice.

I think this is a combination of:

Getting in first - Tories likely to attack Starmer’s record as a “lefty lawyer”
Reminding voters Sunak is rich - polls suggest people think Sunak is too rich to understand normal people’s concerns. Gaffs such as not knowing how to pay using his card highlight this.

The grifter is back…sigh.

Tory election hopes hit after Nigel Farage decides to stand for Reform UK - Tory election hopes hit after Nigel Farage decides to stand for Reform UK via @FT

There must come in every UK General Election the point where Farage retakes the leadership of whatever party he’s associated with and attempt to win a seat.

I thought Farage was finished. Does he actually have a chance of winning his seat?
