Sounds like Republicans would like foreigners to stop owning U.S. stocks.
Gifted article: Proposed Republican tax change would lead to spike in costs for Canadians who invest in U.S. securities - The Globe and Mail
Classic shoot your self in the foot move.
They would first have to learn how to read, unfortunately.
Not sure if it was here, but I saw Delta was refusing to pay tariffs on Airbus planes.
The US has effectively become uninvestible.
Only those near the despot will be able to plan ahead to any degree and prosper.
Nope. No sympathy whatsoever from me.
This article doesn’t go into it but other articles on this subject mention that support for Trump by farmers is still solid despite all the negative things he has done to them. Hard to be sympathetic towards them.
I’d love another round of checks to “farmers” to offset tariff damage.
The rules on those checks during the Trump 1.0 regime were written in a rather overbroad manner.
For example, if, hypothetically, an actuary held the deed for the family farm that was being leased out to someone to grow… I think it’s soybeans this year (hypothetically, of course)… that actuary would be eligible for relief, despite having no immediate/direct harm from the tariffs.
www.reddit.com/r/boardgames is having a rough time.
One of the largest publishers that isn’t a megacorp like Hasbro, CMON, was already struggling and tariffs are probably going to destroy it. They just destroyed via nonpayment (as they’re rumored to be going broke) a small 10-employee board gaming company that contracted with them. A lot of Kickstarters are requiring extra money from Americans to ship or keep their reservation.
The r/lepin (Chinese Lego) community is in shambles. It’s a new hobby for me too, most of my sets come from small shops that ship to me directly which is just ruined if I have to pay $100 tax on something that’s just $10…
And these aren’t just knockoff sets, there are original designs with lots of Asian architectural themes and official licenses too with car companies just like with Lego.
I bought like 15 sets, should keep me occupied for a couple years.
This is a tangent, but, I’ve never heard of this. I assume they make their own blocks. Any comments on quality or fit with LEGO?
I went to the website, noticed the knockoff on the classic LEGO logo.
Also, lots of modern military models, something that LEGO has actively avoided.
Price was stunning – 5,000 piece model of a Harvard building for $110.
I assume LEGO has been a huge cash cow for someone, then the Chinese arrive.
My experience is they are about 90% as good, they don’t quite fit as well. But they are around the quarter of the price. Shipping can be expensive, I’ve paid $50 to ship a $50 set but it would still be half the price of a Lego set.
Yeah there are clones of Lego sets, I don’t get those. I get the other stuff like tanks, aircraft carriers, military sets, and modular buildings. There’s a huge number of brands too, like 50 of them. So they are all releasing their own sets. Imagine waiting on just Lego for new releases, but if you expand your consumption to Chinese brands the number of new releases explodes and the variety is huge.

This is interesting. I know there are people who buy LEGO bricks, then use them in their own designs and resell as sets. I once saw a store dedicated to this and IIRC most of the sets had military themes.
But, it sounds like lepin is further out on the “open design” business model.
Sorry Gavin but you are wasting your tourist budget on
Particularly where there’s been another round of 51st state talk.
Why does Trump think that Canada has the capacity to suddenly supply America with its prescription drugs? Maybe because he thinks we can just switch from our supposedly massive fentanyl production?
If Trump wants to lower costs for Americans, he might consider dropping his tariffs on our softwood lumber, steel, aluminum, automobile, etc., exports to the US.
He’s just reacting to the notion that those evil big pharma firms (at least those that don’t contribute to his campaigns and legal defense funds) are earning excess profits off of Americans as compared to other countries’ residents, and thus it’s perfectly reasonable to try to circumvent such efforts.
Addressing the environment that causes the appearance of excess profits coming from the US seems to be an unthinkable possibility. (Compare with the decision to postpone Medicare negotiating lower prices with big pharma firms.)
