The disappearance of multiple citizens who are vocal opponents of the administration
Widespread active suppression of certain voters
Suspension of elections due to some “emergency”
Imprisonment of opposition candidates for office
That isn’t to say that we aren’t seeing troubling signs of authoritarianism now. But these items, and probably a few others, would be a clear indication that a line has been crossed and that America has fallen.
Baseball fans are pretty laid back. However the NHL playoffs may bring out the worst in Canadian hockey fans, especially when Washington plays a Canadian team.
Those would all indicate that we are past the point of recovery imo. With Trump’s recent accusations of treason against Krebs and Wray I think we are getting closer. We are probably mostly in agreement here, just with slightly different definitions or thresholds for using the specific language. What worries me most is how not-freaked-out people are about this stuff.
This is one more thing that bugs me about Trump’s approach to tariffs: he does not appreciate obvious consequences beforehand. Most folks know how the US car industry is integrated between countries without car executives having to point it out to you.
But how many MLB home fans make the trip to Toronto? I’d guess for the whole season, Toronto gets fewer US fans following their team to Toronto then one NFL team gets to follow their team to Europe.
What will be more interesting is how many Canadians go to Seattle for the annual Mariners-Jays series. There are usually more Jays’ fans than Mariners’ fans in attendance but maybe not this year.
I wish folks who support Trump’s tariff “strategy” would read this article. It is a sympathetic look at the folks who lost their factory jobs due to US trade policy over the past few decades but also shows how the current tariff strategy will exacerbate the situation.
