US media finally pointing out the consequences of Trump’s car tariffs. Trump focuses on destroying car manufacturing in Canada despite the large trade surplus the US currently enjoys. Forget about future US-made cars being bought by Canadians if our industry is destroyed. We will buy from China first.
Yeah, this one seems dumb, and looks like a murder-suicide pact more than helpful for the US auto industry.
The US kills Canada’s car industry, Canada sticks 300% tariff on US mase vehicles, that kills US car exports to Canada, further weakening US manufacturers.
Its going to take a combined effort from (Canada, EU, Mexico, and others like Japan and SK) working together to bring the US to heel.
The unfortunate reality now is that with Trump in charge surrounded by sycophants they have become a rogue state that only cares about how much damage it can inflict (which is why Trump backed down with China when China matched the US tariffs).
Even Trump kind of sees he’s cooked with the next tariffs on his side for 2027 when he’ll be about to be impeached.
That’s a lot of dots to connect when all you have is a broken crayon and meanwhile you’re snacking on the crayon.
I really don’t think Trump evaluates any of this, like none of it at all. One sentence, one subject and one verb and if it’s anything more than that it’s ignored or reacted to.

He’s not worried about impeachment. The Dems won’t have the votes in the Senate to convict.
And with mid-decade gerrymandering, and the risk of shenanigans with White House intervention on absentee balloting (now with SCOTUS blessing),while there probably will be enough votes to impeach, it’s less certain than I might like.

Not as much. They have been selling down their tbill holdings for gold to diversify away from the US in terms of exposure.
They have a stranglehold in the refining of critical minerals, which affects everybody (US included).
Canada is willing to take pain, US is not.

It’s bizarre reading the US coverage. They keep on repeating the claim that Canada is asking for too much, but ignore that we’re primarily asking for what was previously in place before Trump’s tantrums.
American journalism isn’t what it once was. Mass media is less inclined to dig deep, and thus partisan talking points get amplified.
Compounding that is the fact that some Americans think the US has been taken advantage of by its trading partners, and thus the old status quo was “too much”.
Note that it is Tuesday. Expect Taco announcement.
Canada would have settled for much less than was in place before Trump’s tariffs. The US just made such a ridiculous offer that Carney had to walk.
