This is just assinine that the US thinks its unfair that Quebec, a province with a predominantly French speaking province, would demand service and products in French.

Since that article is from the Montreal Gazette, it may be useful to consider the additional context that Montréal’s newspapers have been publicly debating whether Québec’s language laws, particularly recent updates pushed by CAQ, might be excessive.

Could the US side have decided to insert a poison pill demand to the negotiations in order to activate the tariffs?
I keep coming back to US Federal debt and CBO projections relying on that tariff revenue for their projections.
Thats really the main weakness the US has that Trump cannot truly control.
For them (Trump sycophants) its win-win: they win if Canada had caved to the demands, and they still win now via the tariff revenue.

And there was not just one “poison pill”: there were several dealbreakers. Makes you wonder whether Canada can seriously negotiate with the US on tariffs.
That’s an issue for Canada to decide, and not something for the US to impose limitations on.

There were a number of items in the proposed deal that infringed on Canada’s sovereignty. We are sensitive about that right now and I can’t imagine the US tolerating any interference in its affairs!
I don’t disagree, but the debate over language laws is worth keeping in mind when considering reporting on the topic from different media sources, especially with the election coming up in just over a month.
Montréal’s newspapers aren’t exactly unbiased in their reporting on the subject.
EDIT: Although I think the Québec national government has made it pretty clear that when it comes to language matters in QC, that’s a matter for Québec to decide, rather than either the US or the Canadian federal government.

I hate to insult here, but, really? makes you wonder? You’ve had a year and a half of only threats, lies, insults, and broken promises from the adminstration and you wonder whether there can be serious negotiations? Of course there is no serious negotiation.

Had lunch with my buddy yesterday. He was invited, and went to this: Inside the private Muskoka conference that lures Canada’s movers and shakers – including Mark Carney - The Globe and Mail
He’s got 1500 employees the company is like 40 years old. His take is, 50% tariffs, and he’s bankrupt if he has to absorb the tariffs. if he splits the tariffs with customers…bankrupt. The US is 50 % of his sales so if he just stops and reduces staff by half…severance in 750 employees…bankrupt.
Apparently they almost had a deal that was reasonable then they threw in 7 things just before signing, that were all objectionable.
He’s thinking that Carney is going to tariff the crap out of swing states before midterms, Trump will fall back the the deal the almost agreed in, and declare victory over those pesky Canadians, then we keep rolling as normal.

Tough impact for your friend, and many others like him. Trump’s economic war on Canada will bankrupt many firms that assumed the US was a reliable partner.
Meanwhile, Trump spews lies that the US media does not challenge. Hard to get support in the US for a fair trade deal for both countries when Trump’s false rhetoric is what Americans primarily hear.

It’s been interesting to watch the media from in the US. You, obviously, have some sense for what is going on, but how did we get here?
We have a long history of Fox News planting the seeds of distrust, with their fair and balanced reporting. This was always heavily biased pro-business media disguised as the entire picture. Trump came out swinging against the media in 2016, and to be honest, the media did not sharpen their pencils to prepare for Trump winning. They saw it as a long shot, and let some shoddy reporting get through to the headlines, and continued this into the early part of Trump’s first term. FoxNews, Trump, and other right leaning media (the alt-right, which we have now forgotten about), went heavily against every reporting error they could find. That became the new headline, how the NYT fcked up over this, that, and everything else). Rarely was any of this materially important, but the mistakes piled up, and that destroyed the credibility for many news orgs.
Fast forward to today, there is 0 effort from anyone to even acknowledge that media exists. The media is trying to rebuild its credibility, and that requires running somewhat favorable stories for Trump, and ignoring a lot of the unimportant noise that happens daily. Canada trade, is unfortunately, not going to grab an important enough headline to bring forward some complaint about Trump. Those are now precious, and reserved for only the most deeply offensive actions that Trump takes, or may take. Reporting on this daily, as is needed, just makes people even more numb.
That’s where we are. I can appreciate that this is a very important topic, and one of the most important ones for our neighbors to the North, and that can appear as indifference when you look at the US as a whole. I will say, this does still make it to the front pages of many Americans…unfortunately, its mostly just the same 50% that never voted for Trump to begin with.

Media have become too scared to investigate. You know what’s easier? Simply stating “facts” such as “tRump said this.” Period. Nothing about “none of which is true,” or “the sitting president should not act like such an ass.”
