Trump Tariff Watch

That could do wonders for Canada’s supply of nurses and doctors with the US’s other immigration moves.

I wonder if it would result in more work locations in Canada for UuS based software companies.

This is something that will feed through eventually via less FDI flowing to the US.

The US is starting to look a bit more like what I see in Brazil with crony capitalism and protectionism interacting with each other.

Trump making life miserable for relatives of Americans trying to send them.Christmas presents.

The elimination of the duty free thresholds make shipping packages to the US a nightmare.

Good example of the counter productivity of tariffs.

She clearly doesn’t understand her job

Her job is simple: blame Biden for everything.

Trump just doesn’t get it. 90% of the fertilizer that US farmers buy is imported and 80% of that is from Canada. There is a simple reason for it: Canada, Russia and Belarus have huge, cheap quantities of potash. Bottom line is even higher costs for US farmers which Trump will somehow blame on Biden.

Canadian officials met this threat with a yawn as the major potash miners in Saskatchewan are already pivoting their exports toward Asia given the uncertainty of US trade relations.

Carney should put a stop on all exports to the US for six months of:

  • aluminum and other metals
  • softwood
  • electricity
  • fertilizer

Just put a complete stop. Then sit and see what happens. And if he gets pressed about it, he can just say ‘we’ll see’

But that’s why I’m not prime minister, because you can’t be a prissy little bitch and handle international trade at the same time.

It won’t work as Trump has a different objective for Canada than for other countries. He wants to cripple Canada economically and is willing to hurt the US significantly to do so. That is because he sincerely wants Canada to become the 51st state. That can only happen via a collapse of the Canadian economy or via a military assault. He wants to destroy us.

With other countries Trump is just content to inflict modest tariffs on them to raise tax revenues and to increase domestic production a bit.

I think you are giving Trump too much credit. Beyond “I came up wiht Ttrriffs why did no one ever think of this genius policy”, I have no clue what his end game actually is beyond, “How can I grift off this?”

Trump mostly thinks in black/white terms, but his MO has always been how he reacts to perceived weakness (this is projection on his part as he is very insecure).

From that type of standpoint, he sees Canada as economically weak. He can tariff you and damage the country, while you cannot do the same back to the US to the same extent. The way he reacted to China after they counter-tariffed the US right away pretty much confirmed that line of thinking. He now knows that China can severely hurt the US with their response so he has backed off.

There really is not a lot Canada can do in the short/medium term except diversify trade away from the US, and go looking to join a larger trading block (strength in size), as at this point it would not surprise me if Trump starts trying to use USMCA as leverage. This is a risk for Canada that the current Govt should be taking seriously.

Cut off the oil and power.

The Canadian economy is small not weak. When your opponent is ten times your size it is hard to hurt them.

Canada is in a tough spot. Its going to have to trade a lot of short-term economic pain for some possible long-term gain.

Carney basically called it right, but its going to be very messy domestically. There will be a lot of hard choices around oil and cars. He is going to have to step on a lot of toes which will eventually blow back on him.
