He’s an idiot. But at least he admitted he was stupid on some things and changed it. Whether he should get credit for trying to fix a problem of his own making is debatable but I guess it is preferable to continuing to poke the American consumer in the eye.
He is also tacitly admitting that tariffs cause inflation which is a huge reversal on his part.
Trump’s trade war with Canada is forcing some US companies to shift production to Canada to serve Canadian customers. We are moving back to the days before the Canada-US free trade agreement when US companies had to run branch plants in Canada to sell in the Canadian market.
**The U.S.-made Sour Puss liqueur has started production in Montreal after being taken off most Canadian booze shelves. Andy England, CEO of Phillips Distilling Company, tells As It Happens host Nil Kӧksal the fruity-flavoured liqueur is here to stay.
Fermented soybeans?
So another empty Trump promise.
wish last word was biggly
Reuters said this:
CHICAGO, Nov 17 (Reuters) - China bought at least 14 cargoes of U.S. soybeans on Monday, two traders with knowledge of the deals said, its largest purchase since at least January and the most significant since a summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in October.
China is buying U.S. soybeans to meet the pledges it made to Washington at the trade summit in Busan, South Korea, even though the cargoes are priced higher than rival Brazilian offers, two Asia-based traders said.
The “deal” was only made at the end of October so not surprised the new purchases only showing up now.
Meanwhile, China continues to boycott Canadian soybean in retaliation for the tariffs we imposed on China to support the US trade battle with China. It is hard to be a small trading country caught between two behemoths. The sooner we can break the US hold on our trading practices the better.
This is normal as production costs are higher in the US vs Brazil and China needs to fill in their huge demand for soybeans.
Remains to be seen whether Brazil has permanently eaten into the US’s market share vis-a-vis China in respect to soybeans.
I suspect US farmers are going to lose out long-term because China now views the US as an unreliable trade partner vs Brazil.
Good old fashioned…TACO
They should add the accronym to urban dictionary. Am sure that would really annoy the orange cheeto.
The recent SC case also made it very clear the tariffs on Brazil were toast (clearly unconstitutional), so when combined with the rising grocery prices…Trump folded like a cheap suit.
Interesting to read about the knock-on effects of Trump’s half-assed tariff policies. The US lacks bauxite and power to fuel aluminum smelters, but they’ll just tariff aluminum anyway to encourage more aluminum production.
Trump tariffs kill another 1,000 jobs in the Canadian steel industry. Doubtful if it created 1,000 new jobs in the US.
The US is expected to withdraw from USMCA even though that would be detrimental to the US. It hurts Canada and Mexico more though.
Trump may use USMCA withdrawal as a bargaining tactic, trade experts warn
“Some of you may die, but that’s a sacrifice I am willing to make.”
[red font]You realize, of course, that the USMCA is a horrible deal. The person who championed it for the US must be an idiot. [/red font]
Art of Deal
Or how to make a TACO?
Exactly.
Current polling shows a significant majority of Americans do not support Trump’s tariff policies as they believe they increase costs. One more example of how the voters are at odds with their political masters.
“Well, he does make the libs cry…”
