Trump Tariff Watch

Demanding reparations and getting reparations are not necessarily the same.

Agreed.

But at that point, the entire world (who Trump has hit with Tariffs) will be turned against the US because of the economic damage.

Trump will likely be gone at that point (I assume he will stretch out the legal cases as much as he can. Thats been his MO forever really) so the ensuing potential legal acrimony over tariff reparations is going to be someone elses problem (but it will lead to years of acrimony).

Perfect example of a shakedown really.

Pay us £x in revenue (so we can claim victory) and we will drop the export controls.

The US Govt is turning into a protection racket.

Wait, I thought consumers and companies in the country levying the tariff paid the tariffs, not the country having the tariffs imposed on it.

I am presuming he means pursuing a WTC decision about harming markets, as opposed to forfeiture of tariff revenue to the other countries.

Truthfully, the WTC could issue a ruling that we violated every trade agreement out there and we’d ignore it and sanction everyone at the WTC for voting against us. And, other countries would be wow, that’s terrible, I can’t believe you’re doing that and otherwise stand around and do nothing like they’re doing with the Israelis genociding the Palestinians.

It goes right back to my longstanding message: rules and laws without enforcement are merely suggestions that will be ignored by some, to the detriment of all.

Tariff hit for Caterpillar (FT links don’t seem to work anymore so just quoting)

Could be called nationalization, could be called pay-to-play/bribery. We see similar examples in China and Russia. Pay the protection money or the government makes your life hard.

So much winning

Also unconstitutional. You cannot tax exports.

Perhaps it doesn’t apply to bribes.

I know Canadians are staying away from Vegas and other American destinations but maybe Vegas has other issues reducing its popularity?

Part 2 looks too much like a soccer ball. Should make it an American Football, so more people will understand.

And the big increases in prices from tariffs haven’t hit yet. Wait until companies stop absorbing the tariffs.

Absolute chaos this last week regarding the $800 deminimis exemption removal.

Its just not workable in the short-term. Companies have stopped shipping to the US for now.

I didn’t read the post closely, and unfortunately can’t remember where I read it, but I saw in a Canadian group that with the new rules people were having to stop sending stuff they were selling to the US. The brokerage fees were just astronomical.

Seems everything we sell to the US poses a national security threat to them. Getting tired of Trump applying the screws to us. US can’t be a trustworthy trading partner going forward but it is going to be painful in the short run to pivot away from the US.

Trump’s trade “agreements” are meaningless. He will continue to use tariffs as a weapon regardless of deals. Why bother negotiating a deal with him?
