Trump Says the Darndest Things!

He loses because he responded. I think that’s how the “make em crying” game works.

Not always, see Jean Chretien.

You fact-checked?? You lose, too!!

Also need to fact-check with epithets to make Trump feel stupid.

Don’t worry, I’ll visit you in prison.

Totally agree, sadly. Better to ignore him.

Do you see a situation in which a discussion on joining the USA ever happens in Canada in the near to midterm?

Fake news!

I think one of Trump’s goal is to start the union discussion in Canada. Many Americans just assume everyone wants to be American but the majority of Canadians don’t want Canada to become part of the USA. That majority swells in number with Trump as their Prez.

When he does this I wonder how long he expects other countries to just watch American elections without leaning in because they have serious consequences.

That is an understatement:

Thanks. I was wondering if there were any polls on this subject.

Not surprised by the geographic variations in Canadian attitudes. The Western provinces are most open to the idea but even those percentages in favour of becoming the 51st state are pretty small.

It would, of course, be a feather in Trump’s cap to persuade Canada to become the 51st state.

I expected Alberta (Canadian Texas) to be highest but I was surprised Saskatchewan and Manitoba were close. When I was in Canada there was always the view that the federal government only cared about southern Ontario and Quebec which I guess still prevails to some extent. You would would think that would translate to greater support in the Atlantic provinces which you could argue have the most to gain.

I think the Maritime Provinces have benefitted from Equalization Payments so they realize they are being subsidized by the rest of Canada.

Trump is saying Canada would be the 51st state. Given that its population is similar to California’s than that would imply Canada would have no more influence over federal matters than California. That is, it would have a similar number of electoral college votes, House Members and two Senators.

The Canadian provinces would have to cease to exist as political entities as there would only be one State, Canada, presided over by a governor. Canada would have its own state legislature, of course, but that State House would have to govern a State that is geographically bigger than the 50 state USA.

Might as well make it a territory.

People from Alberta are patriotic canadians, I don’t buy any of the fox news bs about them.

Downside: Trump would likely ban the CFL

Upside: As a US team, the Habs would have a chance of winning again

Alberta and Quebec want more autonomy. Becoming part of the US would give them less of that. Can you imagine explaining the concept of Quebec’s distinct society to Trump? The only distinct society Trump recognizes is MAGA billionaires.

Canadian municipalities, like their US counterparts, would start subsidizing sports palaces again. Toronto would help a billionaire to build an NFL stadium. Sad. Going to check out real estate in Costa Rica if Canada becomes the 51st state.

Some are…

Calgary is building the Flames a stadium for close to a billion dollars.
