Trump permabanned

It could just be a coincidence or whatever, but this Trump banning seems to be working marvelously. Maybe we should just revoke the 1st amendment and be done with it.

Free speech was a lot more ok before each and every one of us had a platform to speak to the globe on LOL!

When the Internet came along, we had a chance to see how many dumb people there were but you didn’t see a lot of them because they couldn’t afford $1.99/hr to endlessly shitpost their stupidity and they could only do so much of it on a 14.4K connection (28.8K if they were really lucky) that was only good for so long.

Now, it’s practically free and they have all the time they want.

I don’t get this at all. When he was banned from Twitter he was still the president and could have called a press conference on 10 minutes notice and gotten coverage available to literally anyone. He can still do it with maybe a day’s notice.

I mean, i get that there are concerns about how centralized the “press” has become when a small number of companies control the pipes to the internet. But i don’t get why there are concerns about trump being silenced.

Also, it’s the first amendment that allowed twitter to pick its own editorial policy. They get to choose what to publish because the constitution gives them very broad rights around that.

To the extent we have an issue here (and i think we do have an issue, honestly, although i agree with twitter banning calls for overthrowing the government on its platform) it’s a monopoly problem, not a first amendment problem.

Oh, I was being flippant, and agree 100% that it’s about monopolies, and nobody, including twitter, should have to host an evil person.

Though I do think it really might be working. Early to tell of course, but by now trump would have posted about 400 tweets on average.

When you give a press conference - People expect you to say something important and of value. Not just spout the stupidity that comes into your head.

Also, for most press conferences, the journalists have the ability to ask questions

As for freedom of speech, if Twitter wants to be nothing but a liberal outlet, I see no reason they can’t do that. If they want to limit what they call hate speech that is their right too. Freedom of speech means the Government can’t restrict your right to protest or to speak your mind against the government (with certain limitations such as threats).

How peaceful protestors were treated in many circumstances was by far a greater violation of free speech than Twitter banning a insurrectionist

It would have been fun if he had a press conference with a projector showing a feed of the people he followed on Twitter and he just sat there saying, “See, I like this one. That’s a good meme - I would have retweeted it”, etc.

I don’t think he could just call a press conference and all the networks will automatically give him air time. He’s no longer the president. What could he possibly have to say now that is at all helpful rather than harmful?

As president, we HAD to listen to him. Now, he’s that crazy guy who lives in Florida. Keep him off the air.

I think it’s fueled by ad revenue honestly. Even when he was president lots of what the president does isn’t really covered much because people don’t care to read about it. If Trump calls a press conference I bet he’d get plenty of people to listen.

For example, MSNBC would show Trump’s press conferences when he was president, and then comment on it and dispute any falsehoods. Now? I just don’t see them giving him air time at all, and instead attempting to make him irrelevant. MSNBC is VERY anti-Trump. They aren’t going to promote him. Also, I don’t think it’s good for revenue on a station like MSNBC unless he is president and we therefore have to care.

right now Dr Fauci is speaking to the nation about the federal response plan. When Trump was in charge, he was stifled. So now, if Trump disagrees with what he says and thinks we should ignore the virus’s existance, why would MSNBC give him air time? he’s not the president.

Everyone uses social media these days. Trump not having access to it, is likely going to hurt his efforts to fuck up this country. Hopefully he doesn’t find a new online venue.

Because people will be excited to get outraged at what a ridiculous thing it would be to say and so Coke-cola will pay more to advertise while people are intently viewing

I don’t see MSNBC playing a Trump press conference anymore even if coca cola wants them to.

Maybe, I doubt news stations will make many decisions on principal though otherwise they’d have cut Trump off years ago. It’s a free market and advertising revenue is the driving force behind that. Honestly it’s all an argument in favor of a US form of the BBC, imo.

how would they cut him off years ago? he was the president. in order to be kept informed on what he was doing they would have to show him.

when he was spouting nonsense though that they didn’t think we needed to see, msnbc would cut away from him.

:bump:

My guess is that we’ll see the plan for the “broader efforts” in 2 weeks…
