Trump Assassination Attempt

I think there have been a few local/state Dem politicians who have slipped, and needed to quickly delete social media posts.

The only item that I’ve found reached national media attention was a D staffer, not an actual politician:

There’s a reason that in my earlier post, I referred to the potential reelection of Trump as just the capstone of the existential threat.

My primary objection to Trump all along, even before he ran, has been that he is the mascot for a particular subset of American culture that pains my heart.

Completely understandable

I was not talking about post assassination attempt, I’m talking about pre-attempt that would provoke such a thought. Especially with a quote of “it’s time to put a bullseye on Trump.” I don’t believe at all that an assassination attempt is what he meant but you could see how some crazy person could take that.

But he is a threat to democracy. Among many other issues, he literally created a slate of fake electors to appoint himself president.

The question is whether you are supposed to murder a threat to democracy. The answer is no, btw.

I agree that suddenly the fck your feelings crowd wants to lower the temperature and blame this all on Biden/democrats while for 8 years democrats have been asking for the same.

I also agree that both sides should consider the rhetoric they are using generally.

Lets see what happens going forward.

I totally see how that colloquialism could be perceived as a threat, just like “terminating a person” could mean execution or being laid off.

If that was couched in a pattern of similar rhetoric like “one of you Second Amendment folks should put Trump in the crosshairs”, I would be furious about him saying that instead of a common turn of phrase.

Buckets of liberal tears vs one statement from Joe Biden. Ok…

This is definitely due to partisanship, and it is depressing.

Not sure what to add, but I agree our partisanship is the biggest problem we have.

We hate each other too much, and that hate is more important than our policies or our principles.

So much this!

I read that Trump redid his speech for the convention to talk about unity instead of hating on Biden. I would be surprised if that is 100% accurate but if it is, hopefully Biden will do that same and it will continue into whoever is president next.

My guess it is like that for a few weeks then back to the way it was

I mean, it’s been 61 years and there are still conspiracy theorists who insist that JFK was not killed by Lee Harvey Oswald. There’s an element that is NEVER going to let go of the notion that Biden ordered the hit, no matter how preposterous.

Flashbacks to “Day of The Dove,” in which Media are the motivator, because hate makes them more money than other emotions.

I guess that’s so obvious it didn’t seem like it needed to be stated. Donald Trump is, by my count, the 7th POTUS or former POTUS to be wounded from an assassination attempt, and there have been MANY more attempts made that did not even wound the POTUS. This has been going on for literally 189 years when a would-be assassin made an attempt on Andrew Jackson.

Yeah. This feels a lot less like the Reagan shooting (clearly a crazy with non-political motives) and more like JFK/MLK where someone somewhat unstable went after a controversial figure over politics. The rhetoric currently flowing on both sides contributes to that kind of attack.

Both of Thomas Crooks’ parents are licensed behavioural counsellors. Surprising they hadn’t noticed anything of concern about their son.

Probably had noticed. Just underestimated the severity because who wants to that in their own son?

His reaction was nothing like a real man who never dodged a war.

Summary

On October 14, 1912, while arriving at a campaign event in Milwaukee, Roosevelt was shot in front of the Gilpatrick Hotel by delusional saloonkeeper John Schrank, who believed the ghost of assassinated president William McKinley had directed him to kill Roosevelt.[266][267] The bullet lodged in his chest after penetrating his steel eyeglass case and passing through a 50-page single-folded copy of the speech titled “Progressive Cause Greater Than Any Individual”.[268] Schrank was disarmed and captured by Roosevelt’s stenographer, Elbert E. Martin as he attempted to fire a second time, and might have been lynched had Roosevelt not shouted for Schrank to remain unharmed.[269] Roosevelt assured the crowd he was all right, then ordered police to take Schrank and make sure no violence was done to him.[270]

As an experienced hunter and anatomist, Roosevelt correctly concluded that since he was not coughing blood, the bullet had not reached his lung. He declined suggestions to go to hospital immediately and instead delivered a 90-minute speech with blood seeping into his shirt.[271][unreliable source?] Only afterwards did he accept medical attention.

To be fair, Roosevelt wasn’t protected by Secret Service. There is no chance they would have allowed Trump to stay and deliver (continue delivering) a 90 minute speech while bleeding.

But I do find the comments of “I like Presidents who don’t get shot” to be fitting.
